TIMELINE OF THE... IRISH WAR OF INDEPENDENCE

21 January 1919

01 FIRST DÁIL

The first meeting of the revolutionary parliament of the Irish Republic occurs at Mansion House, Dublin. Known as ‘Dáil Éireann’, the parliament’s members belong to Sinn Féin and declare Irish independence from Britain. The first military engagement of the resulting conflict occurs on the same day at the Soloheadbeg Ambush.
