PLANT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

It is time that we take a more holistic approach with gardening, as we become increasingly aware of our impact on the wider environment. Sustainability is a key consideration when looking at gardening in an environmentally-friendly way.

Many modern garden practices release harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, such as synthetic fertilisers. Being ‘green’ puts nature at the forefront of our gardening choices and works for any garden style, while being eco-friendly is also good from a budget perspective. By starting small and encouraging others in positive ways, there is so much we can do.

Eco sensibility

Multi gold-medal-winning garden designer Sarah Eberle is conscious of the impact of climate change in her work. ‘Our minds as designers and horticulturalists are definitely tuned towards our environmental responsibilities. We are in a prime position to tutor our clients in sustainable gardening and landscape design,’ she explains.

She encourages gardeners to plant more trees, but also to have an awareness of how every action, however small, can make a difference.
