When John Ryan Santos attended the World Architecture Festival 2018, he figured, “We have something to show.” With climate change the most pressing concern in discussions at the festival, Santos felt it would be worthwhile to share his team’s ideas on disaster-resilient and compact hospital design. “We want to showcase to the global community that Filipino hospital architecture has important lessons on how to build hospitals. Because of local conditions (economic, infrastructure, climate, and so on,) we’ve learned to build hospitals that are economical, operationally lean, and disaster-resilient,” says Santos.

The shortlisted entry

The four-year-old firm, John Ryan Santos + Partners, works exclusively on healthcare projects, a specialty Santos has focused on as a solo practitioner since 2004.
