How to win THE HOMEWORK WAR

The first thing to understand when it comes to doing homework is that each child is different, says clinical psychologist Sumari van Rooyen. ‘What’s effective with one won’t necessarily work with another. It’s also why it’s so important to figure out how your child deals with homework – and later, study time – and to make it work for both of you.’

Educational psychologist Suné Scholtz agrees. ‘There are a number of different ways children approach doing homework and although each needs to be dealt with differently in order to keep the peace, they all involve a set routine, a set time, a visual plan for when homework is done, as well as regular brain breaks.’ (See box: The importance of brain breaks.)
