Dutch hoes explained

Handle top The top of the handle should, ideally, be rounded and smooth, so that it sits comfortably in the hand.

Extra grip On metal handles, this helps stop hands slipping. Wooden handles are sometimes tapered where hands grip, for extra comfort.

Shaft length This is key – the tool should be long enough so that you hoe standing upright rather than having to bend over or lean into the hoe.

Head This is usually made from stainless steel or heavier carbon steel for strength. The head must be angled just right so that it skims below the soil surface.
