Still mining the apparently endless seam of metal that time forgot, volumes three and four in the excellent series prove that there are plenty of worthwhile rarities still begging to be heard and savoured by connoisseurs of the obscure and sometimes criminally overlooked. For those who care about such things, there’s some genuine gold dust to be found in the marginalia of metal; bands and artists who made a valiant self-financed stab at recognition, only to vanish before making the most of their potential. True, the production on some of the records is rougher than a badger’s arse, but that’s the charm of it all – lack of budget never got in the way of a band hungry for fame.
