About this audiobook

This is the true story of the brutal Texas murder that destroyed a family, restored one man’s faith, and shocked a nation… At 3:00 a.m. on March 1st, 2008, Terry Caffey awoke to find his daughter’s boyfriend standing in his bedroom with a gun. An instant later the teen opened fire, killing Terry’s wife, his two sons and wounding him 12 times, before setting the house ablaze. Terry fell into a deep depression and planned to kill himself, but God intervened. Upon visiting his burned out property, Terry noticed a scorched scrap of paper from one of his wife’s books leaning against a tree trunk. The page read, “[God,] I couldn’t understand why You would take my family and leave me behind to struggle along without them. And I guess I still don’t totally understand that part of it. But I do believe that You’re sovereign; You’re in control.” That page was like a direct message from God, and it turned Terry’s life around. Now, one year later, Terry is remarried, the adoptive father of two young sons, and working to rebuild his relationship with his 17-year-old daughter, who is currently serving two life sentences in a Texas state penitentiary for her involvement in the crimes.

I hated this book because of the lack of self-awareness on the part of the family member author. As it says right up front, the author's family was murdered by the boyfriend of his daughter. But the moment the book begins, you learn that the father/author is mostly concerned with maintaining complete authority and forcing everyone aorund him to play by his rules. In every case, when it came to members of his family, it was his way or the highway. As is typical in fundamental Christianity, he showed no understanding of teenagers, refused to acknowledge basic biological behaviors and address them intelligently, and had no willingness to see their behavior as anything other than willfully disobeying him. He declared war on the boyfriend from the start, never tried to understand if the boy needed more instruction, or maybe a parental figure, or what kind of family life he came from. Instead, the author continually insulted the boyfriend, saw the worst in his early behaviors, lectured him, and controlled every aspect of his own daughter's life all while constantly issued ultimatums to them both. All that mattered to him was that he be obeyed. And that is what set these murders in motion. The author does not seem to have any inkling that he was a part of why this terrible event happened. And it didn't have to happen. That the book is cloaked with Bible verses and the author is seen as a truly religious and righteous man? I'm just shaking my head. He learned nothing from the murders of his family. Nor does he seem to understand much about true Christianity.

I really really enjoyed this book. If this man can overcome all that’s happened to him, we can also. I feel that if you are a Christian and enjoy listening to True crime you will definitely like it. If you are not a believer you probably won’t like it but if you can get pass all the “God talk” the story of forgiveness and love will come through.

A good book and a truly heart rending story . It was an emotional read and I'm really glad Mr. Caffey was able to find peace after these horrible events. I wont critique his decision to not push for the death penalty but I certainly would have. I haven't walked a mile in his moccasins though, so I'll hold my peace.

This is a very sad but inspiring story. I encourage anyone thinking about reading this to do it. God will speak to you in some way and bless you. My prayers are with the author and his family.

If Erin had not been caught, I would have sworn the dad had something to do with it. Engaged in 4 months after losing everything?

I’m so glad it was an audiobook because the tears were streaming down my face and I would not be able to read the text. How the author was able to survive is remarkable. But with his faith in Jesus he was able to heal and forgive the ones who had done this unimaginable crime.

but reading his current life story was down right depressing. Getting his cousin pregnant while still married to his second wife ugh. i think he’s an opportunist and maybe worse. who knows what he was doing to the first family ugh??

What an amazing testimony. Only some of us who have experienced such great loss can testify in the midst of our pain that ‘God is good all the time’. I’m amazed at Terry’s forgiving heart and the similarities in the godly love he displays towards his daughter. May God continue to strengthen Terry. May many come to Jesus through this testimony.

I cannot imagine going through what this family went through. The pain and suffering for the father has to be a phenomenal level. I am sure the book is therapy for Terry Caffey and his story must be told. Although his story resonated with me, the book or the writing did not. One thumb up.

This got two stars because I was expecting, from the title and description to read true crime. It was more memoir then true crime. Also very religious.
