      A fitting eulogy to the author’ lost faith, conspicuous for its absence enabling the characters’ self-destruction.

      START HERE.

      The characters are [as throughout his books] all people from his own life. With this book [unlike two previous witty novels] he discovered that these people could cast shadows, etc. And here he begins the endless cycle based on the postage stamp size place he knew.


      I had to reread the entire first block of text [not the first chapter, but the first block of text continuing on until there's extra leading and a new block begins], in order get his scale and proportion and thus [thru music] his wit and care.

      In and of itself, it's also an interesting read. Like the boy returned home from WWI who just wants to get into cars and wreck them. The proto-Existential Man?

      I think this is Faulkner's first Yoknapatawpha book. It's about Bayard Sartoris and you can tell that he's still getting used to the county, trying to figure out its ins and outs, the families and institutions that make it unique. For that it's a good read. This is where he really starts to blossom.
