About this audiobook
The heartbreaking and inspiring story of one of America's deadliest battles during the war in Afghanistan, acclaimed by critics everywhere as a classic.
*Soon to be a major motion picture from Millennium Films*
At 5:58 AM on October 3rd, 2009, Combat Outpost Keating, located in frighteningly vulnerable terrain in Afghanistan just 14 miles from the Pakistani border, was viciously attacked. Though the 53 Americans there prevailed against nearly 400 Taliban fighters, their casualties made it the deadliest fight of the war for the U.S. that year. Four months after the battle, a Pentagon review revealed that there was no reason for the troops at Keating to have been there in the first place.
In THE OUTPOST, Jake Tapper gives us the powerful saga of COP Keating, from its establishment to eventual destruction, introducing us to an unforgettable cast of soldiers and their families, and to a place and war that has remained profoundly distant to most Americans. A runaway bestseller, it makes a savage war real, and American courage manifest.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Please. Every one of us civilians must read this book. As civilians we can’t do much, but we can do something. A friend of mine served in an area like this one. Someone from the states sent her Post a box of kites and light sticks. She said playing and laughing that night with those irrelevant toys was one of her best experiences in the war.
Can I do something like that? Can you?
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Outstanding book. Extremely well written in every detail
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What a fantastic book. Thank you to all who serve.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent!!!!! The valor of these men slipped by me in my everyday life. There heroism in a far away corner would have escaped me if weren’t for Jake Tapper’s gripping book. For that and those brave soldiers I am grateful.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Seminal work on us military in Afghanistan outstanding first military book by Tapper
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I found the book very informative. I had absolutely no idea how bad things were in that war. The book was well written and the level of detail was outstanding.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow! The insanity of it all really makes me ill.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent account of the heroic men and women who serve this nation, while not sugar coating the sometimes inept Afghanistan government and the u.s. Command in Afghanistan. Puts in the spotlight the catch 22 many villages I. Afghanistan face: Try to build a functioning government that has failed time and time again or bend to the will of radicals who will be there long after we leave. Next time we bitch about paying taxes think about all the soldiers who couldn't even get a simple hot meal after taking enemy fire for days on end, who were drastically under equipt and left to fend for themselves while rich white guys in Washington decided what to do next.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The sad story of the war in Afghanistan and the brave men and women who fought there, especially at Combat Outpost Keating, those working throughout Kunar and Nuristan Province. That leaders in America failed these men and women from completing their mission due to the Iraq war. Where many men died because of the hubris of Colonels and Generals asking men to do stupid things knowing that the outcome would be bad
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Such a good book, and the words at the end to the knot off... fuck yes.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Some of the military terminology is wrong. Over all good.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is outstanding as a record of America's present most active war (as of this writing). It documents not only the heroism of normal Americans in combat, but the utter futility of the political process and the failure of foreign policy. It is very well written and rings horribly true. This is an especially important book for young people who are the targets of military recruiters, and of political science majors who do not intend to enter the military but may be responsible for what they do in the 21st Century.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I enjoyed the chronological narrative around a single valley/area in Afghanistan. I found the authors prose effective and story provocative. Really, though, it is the story of those who served there that is astonishing and remarkable.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Gut wrenching, eye opening account of the horrors of US policy and the war in Afghanistan. Fighting against entrenched ideologies and habits was always going to be a long term struggle. No wonder the Soviets were so bloodied when they were there.
What a page turning, eye enlarging read.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This story is well written and deeply insightful as are all Jake Tapper's reports. It puts you in the middle of the action and takes your breath away. It also breaks your heart over and over again. It should be a must read for the top brass who commit troops to battle without assessing the support that is required. Thank you Jake Tapper, for telling an important story.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It was hard for me to continue reading this book but as I did so it became so compelling I could not stop reading it. Our soldiers are incredible heroes and Jake Tapper honestly portrayed the true grit of America's finest.
