About this audiobook

Covert-One returns in the thrilling new series from the bestselling master of international suspense

For over thirty years, Robert Ludlum has been acknowledged as the master of international suspense and intrigue. With an unbroken string of bestsellers in nearly every country around the world, his audios have been heard by tens of millions of listeners.

In 2000, Ludlum managed to raise the bar yet again with his widely acclaimed bestsellers The Prometheus Deception and Robert Ludlum's The Hades Factor, the first novel in his exciting new Covert-One series. Now Covert-One is back, in a novel that could only have come from the imagination of the world's greatest storyteller.

Lt. Colonel Jon Smith, currently working as a medical researcher, is contacted by a Russian colleague with an urgent request that they meet in Venice in ten days. When they meet, however, his colleague is killed almost instantly in a hail of automatic gunfire but not before he passes to Smith the vital intelligence—someone is out to steal Russia's store of the smallpox virus.

Completely irradiated, smallpox is the deadliest of viruses and could well cause an epidemic of unheard of proportions should it be unleashed on the population at large. Smith, with the help of his colleagues at Covert-One, must prevent the virus from being stolen. But his adversaries are several steps ahead of him and now he must find and stop the conspirators before they loose Armageddon upon the world.

I just could not enjoy the audiobook due to the reader, his consistent over-inflection at the end of every sentence ruined an otherwise decently written novel.

The plot twist with the space shuttle was just a bit over the top. But still, better than average thriller. It's a "Covert-One" novel, which seems to be the thing to do at the moment. Find someone to write it with and start a group of novels under the same heading. Reminded me so much of Tom Clancy, that I started to read another one of his novels today..... Anyway, back to Ludlum - yeah, good read, something for Clancy-fans.

A continuation of the Covert One series. The bad guys want to contaminate the world with smallpox and our heroes save us from that scourge-but, the space shuttle? That's a bit over the top. Our characters read/listen nicely...but a hero named John Smith? How mundane. Decent book, exciting, fast paced.

I'm generally a Ludlum fan. But do we really need another secret agency that will save the world on a weekly basis? Do we need more secret agents that cannot die (don't we already have Bourne)? Can we really not think of any bad guys besides Russian former KGB? The thriller publishing industrial complex missed these as rhetorical questions and answered a resounding yes! Sadly this is not classic Ludlum. This is outsourced writing at its worst.Casting Big Pharna as bad guy was the one redeeming quality in this otherwise totally formulaic thriller. Recommended only for those looking do do research on why authors should stop writing after a finite number of novels, all others should stay home to shampoo their hair.

As book #2 in the covert-one series it lacked the so called character development seen in the first book so if you were a new coming and had not read the Hades Factor you may feel the characters were a little hollow.

However, as someone who has read the Hades Factor prior to this, I can definitely say the assumption of knowing the characters definitely aided this story - whilst the first book was ok, this one was firmly in 'good' territory.

    A nice paced read.
