About this audiobook
This weekend workshop is a primer on writing the modern memoir, which, unlike your grandmother's memoir, can be written at any age. Also, a memoir can be about just part of your life. "The more you are present, the more the past will come up and be alive," says Natalie. "Only right now can give you your past." Topics include how to crack open structure, listen effectively, use specific detail, find a new angle, fail successfully and make connections with your mind.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Very unattractive noise of an old woman just telling worthless tales about anything but writing a memoir.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Natalie Goldberg reads on 2 CDs. Another excellent set of writing lessons.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another book I picked up because the author is beloved. Goldberg’s Writing Down the Bones was the first book I read about writing that inspired me. I’ve read all her books since then (including one very disappointing novel) but nothing’s clicked with me like Bones. This book was close; I felt a click here and there. Old Friend is fundamentally an expanded Bones. It has lots of fun exercises for those who are suffering from writer’s block. I’d like to keep it a little longer and try more of the exercises.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The book is so full of encouragement and prompts that its practical helpful hints are rather overwhelmed. Its usefulness depends on what the reader needs. The end of the book does pull out its helpful hints in a list and also presents a long list of published memoirs.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Excellent writing prompts.
