This book could be used to motivate children to like school. Sammy the Seal leaves the zoo to enjoy school for a day. The children will think school is fun because Sammy the Seal thought so. This would be a book for the lower levels of elementary education.

Good story for a early reader the story is a little long for a child just starting to read, however it is a cute story and the pictures help you understand the story.

Read this while shopping for other things in Barnes & Noble. Sweet enough message that there's no place like home, but kinda strange, that for the seal, that he prefers the zoo! I know, I know, it's fiction, but it just struck me as odd today. Some other day, and I might have felt more sappy and sentimental about this story.

This story is both Fantasy as Sammy the Seal talks and people hear him and he goes to school. It is also Historical Fiction as it is fiction that was written over 50 years. The setting has a very clear time and place of a big city in the late 60's. You can mostly see this through the illustrations.

Sammy the Seal by Syd Hoff is about a seal who needs a break from zoo. So the zookeeper gives him the day off. Sammy heads into to town, meets all sorts of folks and ends up at a school, where he learns to read! It's a silly premise, the what if being a zoo animal is a job like anything an adult human might do. There was a year long anime series that had the same premise: Polar Bear Café which had characters who either worked at the zoo or at other jobs around town. There's just something endearing about animals and people living together — animals working side by side as salarymen.

Sammy the seal likes life at the zoo, but he wants to see what things are like outside. He enjoys himself, especially at school, but in the end he is happy to go home to the zoo.
