      There is a backdrop to this story that is hardly mentioned in the play (if at all). King Richard's Queen Isabella is aged 7 at the start and 9 at his death. He agreed to the marriage at the insistence of her father King of France when she was 6. Though it appears she bore her responsibilities very well. There is actually much historical complexity in the backdrop of this play which tells the story, not only of the fall of King Richard (the boy king (11) who dies at 29), but of the ascension of King Henry IV after King Richard exiles him, and robs his land upon his father's death. I found the play hard to follow until nearly the end of the play. I think the play has to be read (listened to) at least twice to truly understand.

      The play can be seen as a prelude of King Henry IV (two plays by Shakespeare), King Henry V (one play), King Henry VI (three plays), and King Richard III (one play). These Shakespearean connections as well as the historical significance makes the play worth reading.

      I gave four stars due to the fact due to the historical omissions, and the fact I felt the play was hard to follow. The readers in the adaptation do a good job with the following exception. In the middle parts, the reader read as such different speeds, that I adjusted the speed of the readings periodically to make it more palatable.
