About this audiobook

Acclaimed as a born storyteller by critics, Michael McGarrity packs his powerful mystery with Southwestern lore and breath-taking action. In a wicked conspiracy reaching across the Mexican border, Tularosa pits a jaded ex-cop against tight-lipped Army personnel, hired thugs, and smooth-talking outlaws. Forced into retirement by a crippling gunshot wound, Santa Fe policeman Kevin Kerney seeks solitude on a small New Mexico ranch far from the nearest neighbor. But when his godson disappears without a trace into the harsh, high security desert of the White Sands Missile Range, Kerney emerges to search for the young soldier. His probing questions lead him on a perilous journey across the stark, sun-beaten wilderness deep into the shadowy, cutthroat alleys of a lawless border town. With the winning combination of complex, believable characters and a brilliantly crafted plot, it's easy to see why Publishers Weekly named Tularosa Best Book of the Year. With George Guidall's dramatic narration, the rugged Southwestern backdrop and each of the colorful inhabitants burst vividly from the page.

    A western-police - thriller-mystery.

I don't like this so well as Michael McGarrity's western sagas but it was engaging. I will read another in the series.

Lowered the rating from 4 to 3. Actually a 3.7 but not quite a 4.

This was the first book in the Kevin Kerney series. I had read all of the others but my library until recently had not had this one. The character of Kevin Kerney is so real llife. He has problems, he has dreams that he doesn't see at this writing as coming true, and he has an overwhelming sense of fairness. Michael McGarrity has a gift for putting these traits on paper. All of this series is wonderful. Good reading!

Kevin Kerney, recently retired from the Santa Fe police department, is still recovering from wounds he sustained during a shootout when his partner Terry Yazzi failed to back him up. His former partner is now asking him to him to search for his son, Sammy Yazzi (also Kerney's godson) who is missing from nearby White Sands Missile Range. The military authorities believe he has gone AWOL, but Kerney doesn't believe Sammy is capable of such a thing and suspects foul play. He joins forces with Army investigator, Captain Sara Brannon, to investigate the disappearance. They travel on horseback into the remote Tularosa Valley, where Kerney grew up, and stumble on a hidden cache of military goods from the Civil War.

Barely escaping attempts on their lives, they follow clues to discover who is both buying and selling the stolen antiquities. The search takes them to both sides of the border. With everyone after the missing goods, as well as some ties to cases back at White Sands, a much larger conspiracy is uncovered and Kerney and Sara must do everything they can just to stay alive. When clues lead to the Mexican side of the border, Sara asks one of her investigators to disguise himself and work undercover to help them find the criminals. At this point we are introduced to a particularly interesting character who disguises himself as jorobado, a hunchback believed in Mexican tradition to bring good luck. As the two sides of the investigation intersect the tension builds and you can't wait to find out what happens.

Tularosa is a quick-paced and suspenseful mystery in a southwestern setting filled with colorful characters. The story is well told and there are a number of surprises along the way. The beautiful descriptions of New Mexico and the surrounding area gave the story a very authentic atmosphere. I will definitely be reading more of this series.

(Audiobook) A highly improbable plot involving an Kevin Kierney, an invalided sheriff's lieutenant. He is asked by his former partner to locate his son who has disappeared. The search leads Kierney to the White Sands military range and treks through the mountains, into Mexico, and a pile of artifacts worth millions from some old Civil War stuff. The book has the classic plot: the wounded hero who becomes drawn into action because it’s the proper thing to do. Add the good-looking and competent girl who becomes romantically involved and a bunch of bad guys. There you have it. It feels sometimes like a Craig Johnson wanna-be but perhaps that was only because both were so ably read by George Guidall. The first half of the book is better than the second. The landscape rendition is the best part of the book. It’s the first in a series that shows promise so I’ll probably read the second.

Story Synopsis: Kevin Kerney, a disabled former police officer, has to find out if his godson has actually gone AWOL or if there is more to his disappearance than it appears. During the ensuing search, he comes to terms with the man who caused his injuries, the tentative loss of his home, and perhaps the acquisition of a love-life.Review: This novel was fun to read. It keeps the reader entertained through a twisted plot and the introduction of interesting characters.

Captures true spirit of New Mexican desert in a fast paced mystery. Introduces Kevin Kierney, a hero I really fell for. Couldn't wait to see how his life developed.
