- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Dick Francis can always be trusted to write an entertaining novel with likeable characters and intelligent protagonists. "Break In" was no exception. An entertaining read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This excellent mystery is tied not only into the world of racing, but the world of mass media. It includes the only character to be the lead in two of Francis's mysteries. In this book, I watched as the problem kept escalating and then as the clues to the solution kept being discovered. It was truly a nasty bit of work; I'm glad it got solved. This book is highly recommended for mystery fans.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Steeplechase jockey Kit Fielding is at the peak of his career when his tranquility is disturbed by his twin Holly’s troubles. Holly is married to trainer Bobby Allardeck, and their business is under siege by an anonymous newspaper campaign aimed at their creditors. Under any other circumstances it would be unthinkable for a Fielding to come to the aid of an Allardeck since these families have been feuding for generations, but Kit’s love for his sister and his liking for his brother-in-law far outweigh inherited grudges. As Kit digs deeper into the conspiracy, he receives timely assistance from some unlikely sources.I have a fondness for books about twins that probably stems from all the Bobbsey Twins mysteries I read in my childhood. Kit is a strong, intelligent, and moral hero with a circle of loyal friends who are interesting in their own right. I’m glad that this book is an exception to Francis’s stand-alone works, and that I have one more opportunity awaiting to immerse myself in Kit’s world.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is classic Dick Francis. A tough, resourceful, smart young man dealing with troubles besetting his twin sister and her husband because of his father, finding his way through unfamiliar territory with determined clear sightedness, and impressing the right women in the best way.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5England, ca 1982Kit Fielding er steeplechase jockey.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Middling. The telepathy and age-old family feud are just annoying. The individual personalities of the horses are enjoyable. The period detail, like the primitiveness of the wire-tapping, is fun. The jockey is a tall steeplechase jockey, perpetually starved, which makes for a bit of humor.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In light of recent events involving Rupert Murdoch, Francis seems prescient in this 1980s novel set when tapping a phone meant someone had to get up on a ladder. I've been noticing that Francis's villains often seem a little too bad to be true, and that applies here. But it makes the hero's eventual success all the more satisfying.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Dick Francis is one of my favorite authors. I always enjoy his books. Good character development.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Dick Francis does not cheat or cut corners when he writes. He tells the story straight and doesn't throw in something at the end that he has held in secret from the reader in order to solve the mystery. He doesn't use tricks but, come on, Kit is just to wonderful for words. Everyone else is inept and unable to do anything. Everyone counts on him for everything, defers to him, and he always wins. Gets on your nerves by the end of the book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another of Dick's better books, although it does feature a fairly preposterous plotline - physic twins, Kit Fielding and his sister Holly. However as Kit is a jockey this is one of the books where we get some actual horseracing, always Dirk's strongest point.Kit is pretty much a champion hurdler jockey and one of his main horses' owners is a foreign princess. Just before an important ride Holly comes begging for help, her husband is being ruined by some scandelous newspaper articles. Holly's husband is the son of a family Enemy but the ancient quarrel appears not to have lasted to this generation. Kit investigates the murky world of newspaper publishing and comes across various intreging women and power hungrey moguls. Its a thin trite plot, but shallwo characters, but its also packed full of action and adventure, well written tightly flowing and personable too. Light but good fun.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Kit Fielding #1: a jockey battles to save his brother in law's reputation, threatened by a vicious newspaper campaign. A family feud between Allardecks and Fieldings makes this especially challenging. This series is one of my favourites to re-read every couple of years.
