Author

Michelle Paver

Michelle Paver was born in central Africa, but moved to England as a child. After earning a degree in biochemistry from Oxford University, she became a partner in a London law firm, but eventually gave that up to write full-time. Chronicles of Ancient Darkness arises from her lifelong passions for animals, anthropology, and the distant past. It was also inspired by her travels in Norway, Lapland, Iceland, and the Carpathian Mountains—and particularly by an encounter with a large bear in a remote valley in Southern California.

I loved this book - and I am just a little younger than Sir Ian McKellen (aka Gandalf the White), the narrator. In pondering why the book is considered children's literature, I finally realized that this beautiful story would have had to be spoiled with adult features such as the ugly violence of jealousy and killing as well as things between men and women that are best left private. And I am so much the happier for it. I wish all my reading from here out could be as blessed.

Loved it as a kid, re-visited it and it still amazes me just how good it is. Gave me a love for nature that still persists go this day and I'd confidently rank it among stuff like narnia, the hobbit and other childrens classics that you can still appreciate a LOT during adulthood. Paver did a LOT of research and it shows, truly her dedication is remarkable. If anything I hope a tv show adaption/movie doesn't ruin it.

If I were not an adult I think I would have liked this quite a lot :) But as I am an adult it was too childish for me, still enjoyed listening to this, Sir Ian does a good job reading, altho it's not my favourite reading. I think it's 3 stars for an adult, but 4 for younger people ;)
