About this audiobook

#1 New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel delivers one of her strongest books to date with this trans-generational narrative that draws inspiration from her own family history. Opening on the cusp of World War II and following an aristocratic German family who seeks refuge in America-with their magnificent Lipizzaner horses-this rich historical novel speaks to the transformative power of love and family.

Late 1930's Germany: Best friends Alex von Hemmerle and Nicolas von Bingen, titled childhood friends with neighboring estates, are witnessing the rise of Nazism when Nick's father reveals the long-buried secret of his son's partial Jewish ancestry. Warned by highly placed friends to flee, the only treasures Nick and his sons can take are two dazzling Lipizzaner horses, gifts from Alex. These powerful and majestic creatures become their ticket to a new life waiting across the ocean-one in which a job has been promised to Nick with the famous Ringling Brothers Circus. While Alex and his daughter face escalating danger in war torn Europe, Nick struggles to adjust to life in the circus…until a graceful young high wire walker manages to steal his heart. Spanning multiple generations and continents, this is a rich, involving story of transformation, perseverance, fate, love, and loss, tied together by two families who were never meant to stay apart and the magnificent stallion that will link them forever.

COMMENTS: One of Steel's better books, I always think she does the historicals very well. Nicholas von Bingen aka Nick Bing is a German aristocrat. He has never worked and just oversees his estate and lives the life of an upper class gentleman. Nick was raised by his father believing his mother had died. Nick is in his early 40's w/ 2boys and has been widowed. A friend of Nick's father visits him and informs him that his wife was of Jewish descent. This means in the eyes of the German government Nick and his boys are Jewish and at risk. They have little time to plan before finding refuge in the US. Nick's friend and neighbor bred Lipizzaners and gives Nick one and another prized horse. Nick and the boys begin a new life in the circus. Their winter home is Sarasota, FL and they travel the US adjusting to their new life and new home.

Love historical WWII fiction. This was a little too clean and convenient but I enjoyed it.

Pegasus by Danielle SteelLoved her stories and this one especially as it is teaching me new things. Lipizza horses are highlighted in Germany at the stables where they are bred and raised and trained.Story of a family with 2 boys and the owner is friends with a neighbor who has just a daughter. Both families have lost their wives. We learn how one thought his mother had died but that wasn't the case at all. Nick must leave with his boys:Lucas and Toby. They are considered Jews and they must flee the country.Paul his father can help him with money and getting the horses out of the country. Nick travels to his friends house for comfort. Alex breeds the Lipizza horses and he is aware of the troubles...Alex and his daughter Marianne, he can't imagine what Nick is going through....Alex comes up with an idea to get his friends out of the country...Story follows them as they go to the US to join the circus as he has Lipizzi horses from Nick that he can control....Love how their lives go on, draw apart and come together again. Such different lifestyles and the Lipizzi keep them all together.Tragedies and heartache but also filled with joy and love.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Even for Danielle Steel, this one was very soppy. I don't think there was a couple that met and didn't get married, usually knowing within the week that it was inevitable, even if it took a bit longer to work out the details. Also none of the Lipizzan story was believable. The Spanish Riding School was buying horses in from other breeders? From outside the Hapsburg lands? Already trained? And she would have done well to include the presence of other Lipizzans in the US from 1937, a year before Nick brings his two in. This is probably the worst book by Steel that I have read.
