So easy to read. I bawled at the end but it was well worth it!
this book was unexpectedly really good. i thought it was going to be a boring book that talked about a fun loving dog. the writer is excellent and makes it an easy read. i promise you'll laugh, cry, and make you want to get a new puppy.
A real tear jerker the last 20 or so pages. A true story about a Golden Lab & his family. Its about love & frustration & a looney dog that just couldn't get it.
Such a wonderful book. A friend gave me this after my dog passed and while I held onto it a while before I could read it I am so glad I did. If you are an animal lover you should read this! And even if you're not you should! This book has it all. Love, laughter and tears. I wrote the above shortly after losing our beloved dog Kia. We then rescued our pup Coco who unfortunately or is it fortunately is our Marley Junior couch eating and all! It makes me recall, even now a couple years after reading the book, the funnier moments and makes me laugh out loud, and thank God, we haven't had all of the "Marley moments" as I like to think of them! We have had our own kinds though and our own adventures to remember. It might be time for me to get my copy back from my friend who borrowed it and just reread that wonderful pup's life again...
I adored this story. I laughed out loud, connected Marley's antics to the dogs in my life, and bawled my eyes out at the end. I loved how this story was realistic and could relate to most people. It surely gives us justification for the importance of pets in our life.
Oh wow, that is probably one of the BEST books I have ever read! It was funny, sad, and heartfelt all at the same time. I love Marley and his mischief. I wish that he could have lived forever. Clearance puppy made them millionaires.
Why did I read this book? I knew how it was going to end. I must a glutton for torture. Marley is so cute, and bad, but I hated to see his demise.
Call me sentimental, but any time someone mentions putting a dog to sleep, I tear up. I bawl my eyes out during movies where dogs play a pivotal role. While reading Marley & Me, I consistently teared up. Several times I laughed out loud. This book certainly isn't perfect, but if you've ever owned a less-than-perfect dog, it will tug at your heart strings.
What a wonderful, moving book this was. Anyone who has ever owned a dog and experienced the joy, frustration and undying devotion he/she brings to your life will experience pure enjoyment from Marley & Me. Even though the book is filled with laugh-out-loud humor, it will unquestionably bring tears to readers' eyes, especially as owners relive their own dog's mischievous behavior through Marley. I can't imagine a better book for the dog-lover, or really anybody who has ever loved another.
As the proud owner of a black lab I must confess I started this book with a soft spot for not only labs but dogs in general. It started as a nighttime storybook for my two younger daughters as I read them a chapter in each sitting averaging a couple of chapters a week. The only time it got a little dicey was during the initial loss of the baby and the description of the activities that occurred surrounding that specific scenario. I think it was a touching part of the book and definitely should have been included but was a little too much for my seven year old to hear. For the few of you who don’t know the book/movie storyline the premise is a writer finding himself at the beginning of his relationship which turns into a marriage and blossoms into a lifelong connection. Marley (the central hub of the story) becomes the couple’s rambunctious pet towards the beginning of their journey and keeps the storyline spicy with his constant terrorizing of all inanimate objects within reach of his constantly chewing mouth. Nothing is too sacred not to be digested by the huge garbage disposal that can seemingly inhale plastic, metal and fabric just as easily as he can kibbles and bits. While Marley remains the focus the real story is of a man finding himself in his family which blossoms throughout the book ending with three children (two boys and one girl) and the formation of a loving bond between two people as they grow together in an ever changing environment dealing with house jumping and moving of jobs as careers/family duties fluctuate. The humanistic tone is set from the beginning as the contradictory friend of the main character starts achieving success in his bachelor fashion leaving his friend behind in his marital turmoil dealing with typical family issues. In the end it is formalized that the real winner is Grogan as he finds not only his best friend is his dog but his wife and kids are the only thing that truly matters in his winding road of life. As with all dogs Marley finds his way through to old age and dies as the book is wrapping up keeping true to the fact that dogs lives are shorter than our own and they only have the ability to share a portion of our journey. Hopefully they enhance the scene that they are included in as we should reciprocate the feeling giving our dogs the happiness they so rightly deserve. Dogs are by so much more than definition our best friends. A dog’s love is unconditional and inspiring. The happiness to see you as you walk through the door is something every dog owner can count on no matter what day it is or what that day has brought. The anxiety of being separated from us and not knowing why is the instigation that in most cases causes the remote to go missing, or the blinds to be torn down or as in most cases the little pile of deification to be left as a present for us to see as we walk through the front door. In the beginning and throughout the book Marley is defined as the world’s worst dog and it is easy to see how that label could be justly deserved. Marley tears through garages, eats jeweler, inhales couches and chairs, destroys phones, speakers etc. etc. It is only at the end where the realization comes of personal belongings being insignificant in life. The trinkets we cherish can be no comparison to the love that our family (including our dogs) can bring to us if we only allow ourselves to open up to the possibilities of what and how to prioritize. The book is a great read. Simplistic in nature and heartfelt but a book that reminds you of the importance of love and family from a unique perspective. I enjoyed it and while the movie leaned towards commercialism I felt it did capture the essence of what the book was portraying. I would recommend anyone who owns a dog should read the book and if you are into movies at all take a chance and rent the DVD with a bowl of popcorn and a couple of tissues for the soft of heart. I admittedly shed a small tear towards the end as my lab lay next to my bed and Mr. Bean lay in my lap snuggling while I watched Marley succumb to old age that we will all eventually face. With all of the books and movies out there you could definitely do worse than this.
this was the perfect change of pace i needed after the heavy, pseudo philosophical worldly books i'd been reading. it was light and well written and entertaining enough to keep me up later than intended. in the typical prose of a skilled journalist, grogan tells the tale of experiences with his hyper-active labrador retreiver marley. set in coastal florida (which hit home for me), marley and his family provide a story that is funny and heartfelt, and that will hit home for anyone who has ever owned a dog.i think next up, i'll go back to the more thought provoking books though. as much as i enjoyed it, light and fluffy stuff only takes me so far.
I loved this book. Being an animal lover and the owner of 3 dogs, I could connect with the behavior Marley exhibits(my dog would definitely have been kicked out of obedience school). I laughed out loud at parts and of course had to wipe away a few tears. Definitely would recommend to anyone, but especially any dog owners.
Well written. Laughed & Cried. Have a Choc Lab but not anything like Marley. Really felt for John & Jenny.
I enjoyed this book. And I cried like a baby at the end...maybe I cried a little too hard.

This is a really good book that will make you laugh and cry so enjoy this book This is a book about a dog named marley and his owners named Jenny and John Grogan. The two couple had wanted a baby but first they decide that they should have a dog first to see that if they could handle having a baby. Then one day Jenny and John had gone to a farm so they could go and get a dog and so then they asked how much are the dogs and then they found out that they cost to much so they had to say no but then there was one that was alot of trouble and then the guy said you could get that one for ten dollars of. They had left without getting a dog that day. Then the next day Jenny went to work and
I listened to this on audio book. I really enjoyed it, but would have probably liked it more had it been someone else who read it. Overall, its a great story for anyone that has ever had a dog. There are so many things that we all can commiserate with, but there are also plenty of places where we have the opportunity to criticize from a distance.I got to sit on my high horse and think about the way I act with my dog and how there are certain things that I would NEVER do that they did. However, there was a bit of introspection as well. There are surely things that we could all do better with our dogs, so this is a not-so-poignant way of pointing those out to all of us with dogs.Should probably be required reading for anyone thinking about getting a dog or especially a puppy. I think it will give a more realistic view of what to expect than any of the Dogs for Dummies type books out there. The only thing I would have changed is that I wouldn't have had my dog in the car with me for the end....and again, maybe have had someone else read the audio book.
Well, I liked the film based off of this book. The book I couldn't finish or even bother too. Maybe it's because I never had dogs or any animals at all myself, but this was just... blah.
Very good book. Anyone who has ever even petted a dog ought to read it.
As expected, I cried through the last 30 pages or so. I wouldn't say this book was awesome, but it had some great laugh out loud moments, and I really appreciate books that can do that to me.
Of course I'm peeved that they bought Marley from a breeder even though the author had adopted the most wonderful dog from a shelter as a kid. Toward the end, the author was struggling with whether to put Marley through a surgery that might have been really hard on him as an old dog, and he was questioning the best thing to do considering there were other dogs out there in shelters who needed homes and were otherwise going to be put down. Kind of ironic, buddy, considering you bought your dog from a BREEDER!! I thought maybe he just didn't realize that until after they had gotten Marley. At the end, I thought they were going to redeem themselves since they went to check out a new lab from a local rescue organization. I was happy thinking they would adopt the dog. The book ends before you find out if they do or not though. Then I was reading in an interview that they didn't end up getting that dog, but the did get a well-behaved female lab. No mention of where she came from, but I have a horrible feeling they went to a breeder again with full knowledge of what is happening to all those poor homeless dogs in shelters. GRRRR
And what makes me even more angry is that even with how crazy and troublesome labs are portrayed in this book (doing thousands of dollars worth of damage, being really messy and mentally unstable), I'm sure people everywhere were off to their local breeder or even worse, pet store to get a lab. Gosh, I hate books and movies that spotlight purebreds....

hilarious book about adventures with a lab, who is the world's worst dog
I am not a dog lover, but I loved this book. Very funny, very touching. I was laughing out loud.
I read this book just after getting a dog of my own, who is not quite as badly-behaved as Marley, but nearly so. It was fun to read and gave some insight into why we put up with the smelly, disobedient beasts.
I really enjoyed most of this book...maybe it was because my dog was looking better all the time...but the end was waaaay too sad for me.
I gave it a try, at least.

Probably one of the top three books I have ever read. I cannot recommend this book enough.
