It all starts with a series of thefts in various houses in Rutland Place, home to Charlotte's parents. Then a murder occurs. Because of the nature of the society, Charlotte and her sister Emily help Pitt in his investigation.
    An entertaining Victorian mystery

Charlotte Pitt is expecting her second child, but that provides no reason to stop her involvement in a crime. Carolina, Charlotte's mother, has lost a locket. The problem rests in the fact that the locket contains a picture of a man that is not her husband. Wonders never cease in thinking a grandmother might still fall in love and act foolishly. The story illustrates the conventions and limitations of English society. Perry does a wonderful job in showing real people with real feelings and human foibles. The men seem to play minor roles in the stories, whereas the women dig into secrets to reveal a decadent society.

In Charlotte Pitt's latest involvement with murder Charlotte finds her mother and her parents' new neighborhood implicated. Caroline Ellis has lost something embarrassing, and one of her neighbors has died under mysterious circumstances. Charlotte and Caroline use their social visits to try and find answers. Charlotte becomes more and more suspicious of her mother's secrets. This book is a great deal like the earlier books in the series. It deals with the secrets and manners of the upper class. There's nothing especially unique about this book, but it's a solid piece of work for those who like Victorian mysteries.

I liked this one. There was a bit of humor and light-heartedness thrown in. It showed more of Thomas and Charlotte's relationship. And we glimpsed some different parts of Victorian Life.

Actually, this was pretty good. I haven't read any of this series for a while, which may account for its freshness. I just got three from the library, so we will see if I continue to find Perry fresh.
