About this audiobook

“An absolutely first-rate thriller.” —New York Times Book Review

Seattle PD sex-crimes detective Livia Lone knows the monsters she hunts. Sold by her Thai parents along with her little sister, Nason; abused by the men who trafficked them; marooned in America…the only thing that kept Livia alive as a teenager was her determination to find Nason.

Livia has never stopped looking. And she copes with her failure to protect her sister by doing everything she can to put predators in prison.

Or, when that fails, by putting them in the ground.

But when a fresh lead offers new hope of finding Nason and the men who trafficked them both, Livia will have to go beyond just being a cop. Beyond even being a vigilante. She’ll have to relive the horrors of the past. Take on one of the most powerful men in the US government. And uncover a conspiracy of almost unimaginable evil.

In every way, it’s an unfair fight. But Livia has two advantages: her unending love for Nason—

And a lifelong lust for vengeance.

Is their a fictional family creepier than the Lone's? I doubt it. Livia Lone goes all Paul Kersey on them.

Usually the voice recording suffered when it came out. The author reading their work is usually terrible. Barry Eisler is a superior audio experience, his brilliant narrations, the different characters, different voices.

Great book. Should be a movie series, or tv series.

Powerful, dark, thoughtfully plotted and written. Eisler weaves another heroine as as powerful and complex as John Rain…

What a book and definitely not for the faint of heart. Livia and her sister, Nason, were sold by her parents when Livia was 13. While being shipped to America from Thailand, Livia is determined to keep her little sister safe even if that means being abused by the men who are transporting her. Livia is separated from Nason and rescued by the police when she is in America, she is adopted by a wealthy and well connected man who she has to endure more abuse from. Her will to survive is to find her little sister and she revolves her life as she grows up to help her do so. She becomes a police officer who is well versed in self defense and is known to work hard to put sexual predators behind bars, and when the legal system fails, she takes matters into her own hands.

The story is told going back and forth between Livia's past and present until her past meets the present. It is not a easy read because the content is upsetting and can be graphic (the abuse and fighting scenes). A lot about this book reminded me of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, with similar themes, but the story is it's own. Livia's character felt realistic and the person she becomes makes sense, but I do I hope in the sequel we get to see more development of her character.

Livia and her younger sister, sold into the sex trade as young teens from Thailand, are separated shortly after arriving in America. Livia, who continues to search for her sister, lives unspeakable horrors at the mercy of evil adults until she's old enough to take matters into her own hands. She becomes a cop and vows to seek justice by taking revenge on the many sexual predators she comes across. There are some disturbing scenes in this book, but it is an engrossing and engaging read. Reminiscent of Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander in the Millenium series, Livia is a strong, kick-ass female character with a haunting past, out for revenge. You can't help but root for her, all while wondering if she'll ever find out what happened to her sister. This is the first book of a series, and I'm anxious to continue on.

Livia Lone (2016) (Livia Lone #1) by Barry Eisler. This is a difficult novel in some respects. The subject matter that is used as the main propelling factor for the hero is hard to read through, let alone acknowledge as being part of our world. But human trafficking, as well as the children that includes, is a sick and twisted segment of world crime. Here it is used as the kindling ember for a terrific story. The opening of this book is hard to take. A young woman, on her way home from yoga, stops in a bar and meets up with the wrong type of stranger. He is attractive, much lager than she is, and sees her as an easy victim for his rough, rape fantasies. She agrees to let him walk her back to her apartment but in the park he assaults her.She is Livia Lone, Seattle Police officer and jiujitsu master. She was taken from her home in Thailand, along with her younger sister, when they were 13 and 11. Tossed into a shipping container, deprived of most necessities, and brutally sexually abused, they are transported to America. Somehow they are separated and Livia is rescued from her captors during a daring river barge raid by federal authorities.Adopted by a leading, well-respected businessman in a small town, she becomes his sexual plaything. He rules her with thoughts that he is looking for her sister. This book follows her development from victim to competent high schooler of a sort, to avenger for those who can’t save themselves. This book is not for the feint of heart. Like his John Rain books, this one has a lot of action, martial arts, and anger spread throughout. But the writing is very good and the character’s development rational and well grounded. The subject matter is of vital importance to society but many people chose to look the other way. You can’t do that with this book. By shining a light into this dark deviance, Mr. Eisler helps us understand, and maybe even see, the world around us a little better.

A solid entry in the damaged but tough hero vein with a creative plot. This is not for the squeamish, but if you like tough adventure/revenge plots with surprises along the way, this two-volume set will be right up your alley. I'll be looking for more by this author.

More of a 3.5 (I've read some of the author's John Rain series, and they are more solid 3s)
Rough topics, human trafficking, sexual abuse.
She's a tough one, much revenge is to be had.

    Amazing

Livia Lone. Wow. I have no words to describe her adequately. While I wouldn't condone her actions if she were a real person, I loved everything she did in the book. If you like a strong, badass female main character, this is your book.

To start, I really like Eisler's work... particularly when he focuses on troubled vigilante protagonists who are driven to seek justice (his forays into "political" thrillers are not quite as strong).I had a hard time putting this book down. It was disturbing and satisfying at the same time. You hate everyone you are supposed to hate and you don't feel even a twinge of guilt when Livia does "bad" things. The story is based on disgusting and disturbing activities that really happen, and, while Livia was a survivor, I suspect she exists only in this fiction: too bad. I will be buying any other Eisler books when they come out. (and, yes, I paid full price for this book)

I received a free advance e-copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Wow! A powerful and dark thriller about human trafficking that grabbed me and wouldn’t let go until the very end. The action never quits. Two sisters are sold by their parents in Thailand and trafficked to the U.S. where they are separated. One of the girls, Livia, is conveniently adopted by a wealthy man whose brother is a United States senator but things are not as they seem. Both brothers have dark secrets. She becomes a jiu jitsu master and eventually a sex crimes detective but she never forgets about her sister. Livia is a complex character with a soft and vulnerable side but when faced with abuse and danger there is a dragon within her that rises up and takes over. She becomes a vigilante always on the hunt for a sexual predator. Livia is so damaged by the sexual abuse she has endured in that past that she cannot have a normal relationship with a man. Barry Eisler is an exceptional author that writes in a way that makes the reader feel everything. This is a very well written thriller with excellent character development and an amazing plot. ‘Livia Lone’ is an amazing story in which the author exposes the dark underbelly of the sex trafficking industry. This is a keeper and well worth the read. I hope to read more about Livia in the future, as I would like to see where she goes and what she does next.

Livia Lone is a dark adventure thriller featuring a vigilante cop who dispenses justice one pervert at a time. There is plenty of action to satisfy the adrenaline junkie and a back story to explain the reasons behind the extreme measures taken by the main character. We first meet Livia when she is a 13 year-old living in Thailand. Her Thai name is Labee and her biggest love is her 11 year-old sister Nason. They were Lahu, one of the hill tribes living in Thailands mountainous regions near the Burmese and Laotian border. The last 3 rice harvests had been poor and Labee's parents sold her and Nason to men of dubious reputations. Her parents didn't ask, but would probably not be surprised to find out they were to be sexual slaves. Once the girls reached the US, Labee and Nason were split up. Labee ended up in Idaho and was adopted by a wealthy man by the name of Frederick Lone and her name was then changed to Livia. She did not know what became of Nason. It soon became clear Frederick was a 5 star pervert. His brother was a US Senator and he convinced Livia that he would try to find Nason in return for her total obedience, which he quickly used to sexually abuse her. But Livia was not destined to be a lifetime victim. She began training in martial arts with a friend she met in school and soon was a force to be reckoned with. She studied and trained hard and in time became a police detective, all with the goal of finding her dear sister Nason.Livia was now in a position to not only find her sister, but also to issue some pay-back for all the years of her sexual abuse. Targeting the worst offenders, Livia would use herself as bait and when the predators thought they had the upper hand over the tiny thai girl, she would use her martial arts skills and snuff out their lives. But the emptiness of her separation from Nason still remained. Would they ever be re-united? You will just have to read the book and find out for yourselves.I thought the story was very good and well written. It is set up in a “then” and “now” format, with flashbacks interspersed so we can get some feel for Livia's motivations. I really sympathized with Livia, but the thought I kept having was that she was just a serial killer. But like Jeff Lindsay's character Dexter, it is hard to dislike her for her unusual hobby. For those that savor the flavor of revenge, this is a must read. The sexual abuse is not overly graphic, but if this aspect bothers you, I would advise steering clear of this novel.Overall, 4 out of 5 stars in my humble opinion. I would like to thank NetGalley, Barry Eisler, and Thomas and Mercer Publishing for giving me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Livia Lone is a Seattle Sex-crimes detective who herself was sold by her parents in Thailand many years ago and brought to America. She was separated from her younger sister and will do anything to find her and learn what happened to her. The story goes back and forth from then and now as we get to know Livia (her life, her pain, he triumphs and her desire for vengeance). Barry Eisler writes one intense thriller. It kept me reading and not wanted to stop. I felt so much for Livia and hope she would get the answers she seeks. Certainly, one of his best and I recommend it.

It’s clear early on Livia Lone is not a woman you want to cross. She’s a Seattle PD detective, jiu jitsu master & motorcycle mechanic. She’s also a killer. But if you’re not a rapist or human trafficker, no worries. Chances are she’ll leave you alone. Livia was once known as Labee & in flashbacks we learn how she & her sister were snatched from their tribe in rural Thailand & sold to human traffickers. What they endure is horrific but for Labee, the worst is yet to come. The girls are separated & after being shipped to the states, she is rescued by police & adopted by an influential local businessman. What should have been a happy ending quickly evolves into a nightmare & shapes the woman she will become. Detective Livia Lone is driven by 2 things. As a cop she focuses on putting away those who abuse the weak & vulnerable. If they manage to evade the legal system….well, she’s more than capable of delivering her own form of justice. But it’s the search for her sister that informs every decision she’s ever made & consumes her life outside of the job. As the story progresses, we follow Livia as her investigation takes her from the pacific northwest to California, Thailand & back again. It’s a gritty & disturbing read with no shortage of reprehensible characters ranging from white supremacists to dirty politicians. The author has obviously done their homework on human trafficking & it’s a sobering reality.Thankfully, there are several characters that treat Livia with kindness. Her childhood left her with a twisted view of people & their motives which is reflected in her inability to trust. Relationships are a challenge but as she solves the mystery of her sister, we see a subtle evolution of her character that gives you hope she may find peace at last. This is a dark, intense thriller with many scenes of graphic sex & violence. But it’s also an absorbing story with a compelling cast. It feels like the start of a new series by this author of the excellent John Rain books & I want to see where he takes this original character.

Excellent book! Wow! I am pretty sure I have read (and loved) all of Mr. Eisler's books, but especially enjoyed this main character: a female survivor of trafficking and rape. The author takes us between the time in the protagonist's past and her present as a police officer dealing out vigilante justice to the worst types of criminals. It is very satisfying, especially if you are knowledgable about the horrors of human trafficking. Most people do not think slavery still exists in our country, so this would be a good novel for all to read. Besides, it is just that good. I predict a movie version soon. Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this most thrilling book!
