- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Darkness is the story of Gina Sullivan who is an ornithologist studying on a remote island in the Bering Sea. She is tracing the path of an eagle when she spots a plane that is about to make a crash landing near her boat. Gina saves one survivor, Cal, who seems more than a little dangerous as well as attractive. Gina discovers that Cal's plane was shot out of the sky and that those involved are now intent upon killing them both.
I was more than a little disappointed in this book. In the first three quarters of the story, we learn that Gina's family was killed in a plane crash in which she survived, Cal is carrying important information that might change the balance of power between the US and Russia, and most of Gina's team has been killed. The last quarter of the book seems rushed in that we get the solution to all of these problems as well as a relationship between Gina and Cal. The story just felt like so much was missing. It was a decent story with a good premise, but that's about all it had going for it, and it could have been so much more. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I read this book in one sitting. Loved it! Yes, as some other reviewers have said there was a little too much description, especially in the beginning, but a lot of it was necessary. I could almost feel myself being lost in that frozen landscape, fighting for survival against the elements. The plot raced along, taking me with it.A great read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Gina is a professor studying birds on the island of Attu. She witnesses a plane crash. This is just not any plane crash! This is all about the murder of one of the plane’s passengers. When Gina finds a survivor, it turns her life around in more ways than one. I have been in a reading slump lately. Started several, just couldn’t finish. When this novel came in my XOXpert shipment, I knew this would be a great read to move me out of my slump. I have not read a Karen Robards novel in a long time. This was like visiting an old friend. This is the perfect beach read….it is set in on a COLD Alaska island called Attu. Perfect for a hot summer day!!! The setting is amazing. I did not realize Attu was the only place a WWII battle was fought on American soil. Of course, I had to google it. I really want to visit this place someday! Gina and Cal are at odds on many levels. They can argue with the best of them….then, as you can guess, they heat up the pages nicely. Gina takes no crap off of Cal! Makes the whole story very entertaining!Start to finish, this is a divine read. The setting, the characters and the chase reveal an absorbing story! I received this novel as part of the XOXperts.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Darkness- A Thriller- by Karen Robards is a 2016 Gallery Books publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher, as an XOXpert, the official street team of XOXO After Dark. Karen Robards’ is one of those authors who writes across several romance genres. But, she seems to have settled into a nice groove with her romantic suspense novels. Gina Sullivan is an ornithologist on the island of Attu, Alaska, along with a small group of researchers, when she witnesses the crash of a small airplane. Despite the odds, there is one lone survivor, Cal Callahan. Gina rescues the stranger, but an instant feeling of mistrust develops between them and Gina finds she is relieved to see the back of him, even if she was strangely drawn to him physically. But, she hasn’t seen the last of Cal, not by a long shot, as the couple find themselves running for their lives. This story will grab your attention right away, and I felt my pulse quicken by the end of the first chapter. The action kept on coming for a short while as the author does a pretty good job of describing a harrowing rescue, the tension of being stranded with a stranger, and feeling of imminent danger. The twist and excitement kept coming, but whenever the author attempted to infuse a little romance into things, it fell flat, really flat. While I understood Cal had secrets he couldn’t divulge in his line of work, which gave him a little added mystique, I never warmed up to him. The dialogue between Cal and Gina was almost laughable at times, and not in a good way. It was just unrealistic for the type of situation they were in, and Cal’s comments bordered on sexist at times, which also did not endear me to him. While I did feel sympathy for Gina and her incredibly sad background, and her ordeal was addressed to some extent in the limited space allotted, but her character was a little bland, and her sexual thoughts about Cal seemed silly, after the truly horrible shocks she had experienced, which would have killed any romantic scenario I had entertained. I don’t care if I was stranded with Brad Pitt, I doubt sex would have been foremost in mind, since survival was not a sure thing and I had just barely escaped death, among other things. Well, okay, maybe if I was stranded with Brad Pitt, but, otherwise? I didn’t think it was too plausible, and because the romance seemed so forced, it took away from the story and bogged down the momentum. While the explanation for all that took place was very interesting, with lots of intrigue, the conclusion was rushed through, and a little anticlimactic. With so much information thrown at me in the last chapter, I wondered why some of that had not been incorporated into the story throughout. So, mostly this is a story of survival and closure, adventure, and suspense, and not so much about romance. I think if the author written this one like a standard thriller, it would have worked a lot better, but that’s just me. Overall 3 stars
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Seriously surprised how much I enjoyed this one. There's a theme of plane crashes that runs through the book. The setting: an ornithologist and a 'private contractor' stranded on an isolated, icy island in Alaska trying to stay away from the bad guys while battling the elements. I was wondering whether there would be enough there to make this into a gripping romantic suspense story considering the majority of the plot involves the two main characters interacting. But wow, Karen Robards surely did. This was full of action, adventure, suspense and hot romance. The attraction between Gina, the serious but strong professor/ornithologist, and Cal, the mysterious guy whose life Gina saves, builds up slowly and develops from mistrusting each other to having to cooperate to stay alive. There were parts that reminded me of the Indiana Jones movies, in a fun and entertaining way. There was more emphasis on the suspense part of the story but Karen Robards definitely knows how to include and write steamy scenes.I haven't read any of Karen Robards's other books, but will definitely remedy that now.If you enjoy romantic suspense novels, don't miss this one.I received a copy via NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Another author where it has been a little while since I have read a book from. I was first drawn to this book by the eye catching, colorful book cover. Having read some books by this author I knew what I was in for and was ready to jump in. While I did like this book I felt like it could have been better. The intensity level was just middle of the road and it never really got cranked up. Even the romance between Gina and Cal was "just ok". Part of this was because of Cal's attitude. I understand his reasons for being abrupt towards Gina but in turn this caused me to find him some what off putting. So when they first kissed I did not feel any passion. Although, this book was a quick read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Karen Robards is a master at writing romantic suspense. No matter how ludicrous the situation may seem as fodder for romance, somehow she makes it work. "Darkness" is no exception.Dr. Gina Sullivan witnesses a plane crash on the remote island of Attu, where she is performing ornothological research. She rescues the sole survivor, Cal, only to realize that whatever Cal was involved in has put her in grave danger. As Gina and Cal run from people bent on killing them, they find themselves irresistibly attracted to each other. Is it because of being placed in an adrenaline-spiking situation together? Or is there something more?I would characterize this novel as more romance than suspense, but that's ok. It's par for the course when reading romantic suspense; you never know whether the novel will lean more toward romance or suspense.I give this novel 4 stars for solid writing, good character development, and strategically placed, non-superfluous sex scenes. The book was not un-put-downable (which would have warranted 5 stars), but it came close.
