While T.C. Boyle is known as one of our greatest American novelists, he is also an acknowledged master of the short story and is perhaps at his funniest, his most moving, and his most surprising in the short form. In The Relive Box, Boyle's sharp wit and rich imagination combine with a penetrating social consciousness to produce raucous, poignant, and expansive short stories defined by an inimitable voice.
From the collection's title story, featuring a Halcom X1520 Relive Box that allows users to experience anew almost any moment from their past to "The Five-Pound Burrito," the tale of a man aiming to build the biggest burrito in town, the twelve stories in this collection speak to the humor, the pathos, and the struggle that is part of being human while relishing the whimsy of wordplay and the power of a story well told. In stories that span a variety of styles and genres, Boyle addresses the enduring concerns of the human mind and heart while taking on timely social concerns. The Relive Box is an exuberant, linguistically dazzling effort from a "vibrant sensibility fully engaged with American society." (The New York Times)

- Penilaian: 4 dari 5 bintang4/5I really liked the science fiction stories in this collection, like the title story “The Relive Box” and “Are We Not Men?“. Reading all the stories in one go was probably a mistake. The themes in most of the stories is the same: there’s a man who‘s a bit of an anal jerk but he‘s our hero and he’s fighting the good fight in a hostile world full of terrible people. The women are generally peripheral and underdeveloped characters. The stories are well written and entertaining but it’s like eating a big bag of delicious chips - you feel kind of gross when you finished the whole thing.
- Penilaian: 5 dari 5 bintang5/5The Relive Box and Other Stories by T. C. Boyle is a highly recommended collection of twelve short stories.Contents include:The Relive Box: A device that allows people to revisit and relive scenes from their past slowly takes over their current lives. She's the Bomb: A non-graduating college senior goes to desperate measures to stop the ceremony. Are We Not Men? In a future where people custom-design children and pets through transgenic reproduction. The Five-Pound Burrito: A magic realism tale of a man who has a vision to offer his customers a five pound burrito. The Argentine Ant: A plague of ants invades the house a mathematician rented for his familySurtsey: A storm is flooding the whole island and everyone is sheltered at the school.Theft and Other Issues: A man's car is stolen with his girlfriend's dog inside it.Subtract One Death: Death becomes too close and personal for a novelist. You Don't Miss Your Water ('Til The Well Runs Dry): The California drought worsens and water restrictions increase. The Designee: An elderly man falls for a scam artist's pitch.Warrior Jesus: A man channels his anger into making disturbing comic-book superhero episodes. The Fugitive: A man with an illness is required by authorities to wear a mask at all times.Boyle's incredible genius is on full display in this varied collection. The topics of his stories span a vast field of topics, from technology to nature, and can be about ordinary circumstances to futuristic developments. He has the ability to capture people amid their struggles with humor, social conscious, and intelligence. This skill, combined with his strength of descriptions and the narrative voice he gives his characters, shines through in these twelve stories. I enjoyed the majority of these stories a great deal. It's always a pleasure to read a well-written short story.Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of HarperCollins.
- Penilaian: 4 dari 5 bintang4/5The Relive Box, a collection of ten short stories, was a lot of fun to read. Certainly its pages are suffused in darkness but that is only a reflection of the temper of our times. The stories were a revelation to me as I have read some of Boyle's many novels and I was not impressed. His short story output, however, is quite prolific: when you do something well, persist! One story herein dealt with the effects of a long lasting drought in a California suburb and I fear this account will become prophetic! Another, "The Relive Box," looks into the disintegration of the people who use a popular device, like a DVR, that reads the inside of one's brain; where you can relive again and again a filmed narrative of any event in one's life! (I am a Luddite, but I would buy such a device in a heartbeat! Does that make me a narcissist?) And then there were the married academics, starting their dream sabbatical in a quaint Italian village, until an ant infestation from a nightmare ends that reality. There is a spaced-out narrative voice in these stories that give them a thoughtful, literary heft!
