About this audiobook
SSA Rain Christiansen used to be the agency's golden boy. It just takes one moment of weakness, one slight, tiny, itty-bitty paranormal sighting, and all of a sudden he's the agency's embarrassment. His boss gives him one last chance to redeem himself-go down to Brickell Bay, play nice with the local police, and leave the ghost sightings behind. Rain is determined to do exactly that, even if it kills him.
Cold-case detective Daniel McKenna's latest investigation is going nowhere fast. Five years earlier, high school student Amy Greene went missing after leaving her part-time job and was never seen again. Daniel is glad to finally have the FBI help that his department requested, even if it does come in the form of his ex.
It doesn't help that Rain is pretty sure he's falling in love with Danny all over again-if he ever stopped. Add to that the frustration of seeing ghosts at every turn while he works a case that's stalled in its tracks, and Rain is starting to wonder if second chances and happy endings are just for fairy tales.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Good start, but the 2 MCs have just met again, after years, and all Rain can seem to think of is the sex. They had a 4 yr relshp, and nothing else comes to mind? Not a single memory other than "he was a considerate lover"? No wonder the ex feels their previous relshp was just an extended one night stand.
Hanging in there to see if it gets better...2 people found this helpful

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book, super characters and story line. I really enjoyed the narrated version. Definitely worth a listen
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5If Victor Bayne from PsyCop and Dex from THIRDS had a child and it was written into existence by Alice Winters and then watered down, that would be the correct description of Rain Christiansen, our MC. For him to be anything law enforcement is blatantly unrealistic and the whole story is just one big stress test of my suspension for disbelief.
The writer equates love to lust - we were told Rain and his ex were together for 4 years, but all we see is them lusting after one another now. There was no sense of intimacy or anything else beyond how hot Rain thinks his ex still is.
And yet... I had fun. A lot of it has to do with reading it in audiobook format, I'm sure. For now, I think I'll continue the series as long as the audios are available on Scribd. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is an excellent urban fantasy novel with gay characters. If you like Anita Blake novels and always wanted it from a gay man's perspective then this is what you've been looking for. I can't wait for more.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I'd heard such good things about this book, but I was saving it for just the right time. And apparently yesterday was just the right time. I mean it's September now, which means October is next month, which means ghosts and paranormal happenings and things that go bump in the night. And this book was great! It doesn't have to be a fall read; it's set in Florida for the most part, so it'd be a great summer read or even winter read (when you're beginning to think that you'll never be warm again). Or just a great read period. The book is narrated by Rain(storm), an FBI profiler who comes from a hippie family. He also sees ghosts. At the beginning of the book he thinks he's more than a bit crazy (as does everyone else in the his department; the whole reason he's sent back home to Florida to work on a cold case is to establish if he's okay or not), but he begins to accept that, yeah, he really sees ghosts and, yeah, he can really communicate with them. Rain is also hilarious (I found myself laughing out loud more than once while reading this book). Then there's Danny, Rain's ex-boyfriend. He left Danny in Florida three years ago to take a job with the FBI in DC. Or, at least, sort of. He also left Danny because he was starting to see ghosts and thought that a change of place might make him not see them. Rain didn't trust Danny enough to tell him that he was seeing ghosts; I can't really say that I blame him, especially since whenever Rain has to tell people (except the ghosts themselves and his hippie family) things don't go so well for him. I mean, really, how would you react if someone told you that they saw ghosts? Also, it was hinted at strongly more than once that Rain kind of expected Danny to follow him in some way - to try to make a long distance relationship work between them. Danny didn't. I'm not sure how I feel about this part. And there are also ghosts, including Ethan, whom I really liked. Part of me kind of wanted him to find his peace and move on (whatever that entails - Rain isn't sure) and part of me just wanted him to hang around forever because he was hilarious. A little creepy because he wanted Rain and Danny having sex, though.I was expecting a shade more angst between Danny and Rain because they did not leave in a good place three years ago. There was some tension, for sure, but I could have done with a bit more. I am an angst whore, after all. ;) But for two people being forced to work together after a relatively bitter breakup, they did well for the most part. It also becomes clear that, even though they were in a relationship for years, they never really fully trusted one another. Rain, as mentioned before, never told Danny that he saw ghosts. And Danny never told Rain that his father is in prison for murder and that he goes to see him once a month; nor did Danny tell Rain that his sister, Anna, disappeared and was presumably murdered because no one has heard from her in years. All of this eventually comes out. I can't say that either character is "at fault" here for not trusting the other. Rain, after all, is worried about coming across as crazy, especially since he alone out of his hippie family is "straight" (not sexually speaking LOL). He's the suit-and-tie G-man. Seeing ghosts doesn't really fit into that, much less communicating with them, and he's genuinely afraid that he's about to snap off into crazyland more than once in the book. Danny, on the other hand, I totally empathize with this character. Growing up in foster care for much of his life because his parents were, quite frankly, horrible people, he was afraid of trusting anyone too much. He was also afraid of letting anyone into his heart completely, because it'd only make rejection more painful (and in cases like this, aren't we always afraid that rejection is only a matter of time?). Totally understand that. So yeah, they had some major trust issues to work out in this book.I enjoyed the mystery with Amy, and I definitely wanted to find out what happened to her. We do. Amy was in love with her best friend, Jenna, and they were planning to run away together to go to college in Arizona. Jenna's mother, who had lost her son and blamed Jenna for it, wasn't having it. She ended up killing Amy. Amy eventually finds her peace, it is presumed, since her body is found and her murder solved. The ending felt just a little off to me. First off, the storage unit felt a little weird to me. It was the cheapest of the possibilities, but Amy hadn't been around for what, five years? Did she honestly pay five years into advance on that thing? I can't see why she would, considering that she fully expected to be living in Arizona with Jenna in a few months when she got it. But all of the stuff was still there, untouched, five years later. In the real world, it would have been long gone. I don't know of any storage unit place that is going to let you not pay for FIVE YEARS and still keep your stuff there. Also, it felt a bit out of character for Rain to run off half-cocked without telling anyone. He does take dangerous chances in the book - chasing after Brock is one of them - but I feel like he would have at least TOLD someone (maybe not Danny, but his sister or SOMEONE) that he was going to meet with Jenna's mother, who he already believed before that time to be a possible suspect in the murder. But he doesn't. So that scene felt...off to me. But all's well that ends well? The ending feels a bit more HFN than HEA. Rain decides to listen to the ghosts and quits the FBI. Danny is telling him that they might set up a paranormal unit at the local police station where he works and get Rain into that kind of job, which is positive, considering that Rain really didn't have much of a clue about what he was going to do except move back to Florida, hopefully patch up his relationship with Danny, work with ghosts, ???, PROFIT! But they still have SO MUCH to work on when it comes to their relationship; I walked away from the book feeling that their relationship is still pretty fragile. So I'd love to see another book (or ten!) in this series so we can get more from these two characters and get them into a better place. ;)Also, I really want Rain to tell Danny what happened to Danny's sister. Rain told Danny that he had seen his sister's spirit and she had spoken to him, but Danny was still kind of not on the whole "I talk to ghosts" train at the time and he wasn't in the right place to hear what she (through Rain) had to say, either. I WANT THAT SCENE, DAMMIT.
