About this audiobook
The lights are on at the Singleton vacation home on Lopez Island, Washington, illuminating the horror within. Scott Singleton, former NFL star turned television evangelist, lies dead. The bodies of his wife and four of their five children are found on the second floor, bound, gagged, and stabbed repeatedly. The oldest daughter was shot downstairs. And the police's main suspect-the property caretaker-has disappeared.
In her secluded vineyard home two hours away, Laura Gretchell is on edge. Her husband is out of town on business, and the children are understandably shaken. Laura tries to tell herself there's no reason to fear. Then the door handle rattles, and the real terror begins.
They're in her house, holding her children hostage, and Laura has only one option: do exactly what the intruders say. But as Laura races to find the information they seek, she realizes that the enemies within her own home are only part of the nightmare. Because someone wants to keep the truth hidden at any cost, no matter how many more must die . . .

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I would like to thank Tantor Audio and LibraryThing for a free audio for an honest review. This was my first Kevin O'Brien book but won't be my last. The story grabs you from the start and does not let go. Five members of the Singleton family are murdered and the caretaker is missing. Laura Gretchell's family is being held hostage by the caretaker and a former student of Laura. Sean Grechell is away in France checking out wineries. I found the plot twisty, suspenseful and fast-paced with very believable characters. My favorite characters were Laura and her daughter, Sophie. I found them both to be very courageous. I loved listening to the audio as the narrator was very energetic and commanding. I would recommend this book to those who love mystery thrillers.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Was this even written by Kevin O’Brien? This author up until this book wrote scary psychological thrillers unlike anyone else. This was the first book by him I had no trouble putting down and doing something else.
It was as if the publisher grabbed some guy out of a creative writing course and told him the storylines of a number of O’Briens books and then said now write the next one.
The first 40 pages are setting up what should be a great story then 340 pages of idiocy,
And then the book spends 80 pages explaining everything you already knew happened or would happen.
Unfortunately the 340 pages are where you have to suspend everything you know about how most people would behave and just believe this was realistic.
The home invaders portion or the story took over from the main story and was unneeded, unreal, and at times comical.
I sure hope this was a one off mistake and not the path his future books will follow. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a fast paced thriller that certainly kept me entertained. In the story Laura Gretchell and her children are held hostage in their home by two men. One man is the caretaker of a nearby home where an entire family was just murdered, the other is a former student of Laura's . Laura's husband is out of town so it is up to her to find out what these men want and save her children. I found this to be a fairly well done thriller, there were ups and downs and unexpected twists throughout the book. My only reservation was that I didn't find Laura and her reactions entirely believable. Aside from that issue I found the book very enjoyable and the audio was well done. This review is based on a copy of the book given to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed listening to the reader, he did an excellent job. Overall the book itself was pretty good. It got better as it went along and the end I felt made up for the shortcomings in the beginning. I hate when an otherwise intelligent person does something very stupid in the beginning just to have an 'explanation' to get the story where the author wants it to be. Which was how this one did start. Decent thriller, ending was pretty close to what I expected.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I really couldn't stand this and quit a quarter of the way through. Very familiar scenarios have been spliced together, solely for the purpose of creating tension and fear in the listener's mind. I don't need that, and I thought the narration was a bit over the top, as well. I'm giving it two stars only because just maybe it got better after I quit.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I received this book in exchange for a review. I have never read a book by this author previous to this one and I have to say that I will be checking him out. Love this one. The intrigue, the excitement, everything that happens keeps you drawn into the story. The main character, Laura, has you in her corner and makes you feel like you know and understand her. There are a few times I wanted to shake her and say COME ON! I definitely enjoyed this one.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5While this isn't destined to become a classic in the thriller genre, it still is a pretty good thriller. Most of the story takes place in a home where the residents are held hostage by two men: one accused of murder and his brutal friend. The story occasionally stretched credulity, but not so much that my little fiction-loving mind couldn't buy into the story. There is a conspiracy among supposedly good people, and a reason why this particular house was chosen for invasion. It's not too gruesome, but still, people are murdered. Whatdaya expect? I cared about the characters and wanted to know how the whole thing was going to turn out. This is a good piece of entertainment. This is the first book I've read by this author, so I cannot compare to his others. I listened to the audio version and most of the voices were very well done but a couple didn't sound authentic.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I must admit that I picked up this book because I thought the dark house on the cover looked intriguing. The tittle wasn't particularly interesting...but what the heck? I was captured from the first chapter. I read more than half the book in one setting and the only reason I stopped was because the words were starting to run together. The characters...at first I felt rather sorry for Joe...I soon became frustrated with his follow the leader attitude and wished he's grow a backbone. Vic...was just plain evil from the start and never got any better. I found myself hoping that he would die soon. some wishes are never granted and I soon realized that Vic was part of the reason the book held the appeal for me that it did. Sophie and her children...the real victims here and not so much the murdered family that started this whole mess. The Singleton family that we meet in the beginning...secrets, secrets and more secrets. Overall, a realy good worthwhile read.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This is billed as the latest from "New York Times bestselling author" Kevin O'Brien. It is the tale of Laura, a former teacher, turned vineyard owner with her family, who is held prisoner by a former student who adored her when she was his teacher and his accomplice, a murderer who escaped from a psychiatric center to "save" is friend as they both had spent time there together. While her family struggles to survive with these two in their home, Laura embarks on a mission to find proof her former student did not commit the murders he was originally accused of committing. She uncovers the truth, but the bottom line was, I simply did not care. It dragged on and on, the action predictable and therefore, too simple for me. I have put this author on my don't bother to read again list.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This is the first book that I didn't like by this author. Usually in the past I have not had problems jumping right into the book and reading it. Yet, this time, it felt like the story just kept going on a continuous loop. There was action but it was slow burning. This did not help the story. The intensity needed to be stronger as a lot of the story was just happening in a house with a small core group of characters. I kept with this book because of the author. Although, there were times when I did skim it to make it go faster. When I got to the ending, I would say it was a bit of a disappointment. Overall, I was kind of bored with this book. I hope that the next book scores with me.
