#1 New York Times bestseller

“A pure distillation of fantasy’s enchanting mirror held up to our own truths.” —Entertainment Weekly
“Richly imagined…rife with action, intrigue, and smoldering romance.” —Publishers Weekly

From #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Cassandra Clare comes the first novel in a brand-new trilogy where evil hides in plain sight and love cuts deeper than any blade. Chain of Gold is a Shadowhunters novel.

Cordelia Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, a warrior trained since childhood to battle demons. When her father is accused of a terrible crime, she and her brother travel to London in hopes of preventing the family’s ruin. Cordelia’s mother wants to marry her off, but Cordelia is determined to be a hero rather than a bride. Soon Cordelia encounters childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale and is drawn into their world of glittering ballrooms, secret assignations, and supernatural salons, where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians. All the while, she must hide her secret love for James, who is sworn to marry someone else.

But Cordelia’s new life is blown apart when a shocking series of demon attacks devastate London. These monsters are nothing like those Shadowhunters have fought before—these demons walk in daylight, strike down the unwary with incurable poison, and seem impossible to kill. London is immediately quarantined. Trapped in the city, Cordelia and her friends discover that their own connection to a dark legacy has gifted them with incredible powers—and forced a brutal choice that will reveal the true cruel price of being a hero.

Cassandra Clare's writing just gets better with every book. Great characters, fun storyline. The narrator was fantastic. I hope this narrator does the next books as well!

I’m liking the actual book, but this audiobook is skipping around randomly on me and there’s no going back to where it skipped. I hope not all audiobooks are like this on this site.

If I was rated all of Cassandra Clare's 1st books in series, this would be near the top of the list. I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction but the Shadowhunters atmosphere made it easy to draw me in.

As always beautifully written and read. One day someone will do justice to these books as a tv series. Hopefully all the novels and stories.

I love each and every Shadowhunter book as I discover them... I keep coming across spinoffs and prequels that I didn't know about, and I love these discoveries. This trilogy is a standout, quite good so far (I've read "Chain of Gold" and "Chain of Iron") with the characters and dialogue seeming more nuanced than others I've read recently. Cassandra Clare's storytelling style feels particularly well-suited to the Edwardian timeline, more so than the modern-day Shadowhunter books.

To call out a few favorites, I really enjoyed James and Lucie Herondale; and Matthew's exchange with Magnus Bane stole the show for me -- but to be fair, Magnus steals every scene in every book with even the briefest mention of him, with his sparkling wit and quick tongue. This part makes me chuckle every time I read it, and I can absolutely hear the voice and cadence of Magnus in the "Untrue" line:

    [Quote from Pg 439 (Kindle):]
Matthew looked delighted. “We could have tea. I am a true enthusiast of your work, Mr. Bane.
Also, your personal style. Your waistcoats alone…”
“Matthew, do shut up,” said Thomas. “Mr. Bane doesn’t want to talk about waistcoats.”
“Untrue,” said Magnus. “I always want to talk about waistcoats."
    [end Quote]

Highly recommended not only for Shadowhunter fans & completists; but also as a stand-alone Edwardian adventure for fans of historical fiction with paranormal elements. Knowledge of the Shadowhunter world is helpful, but not required.

I like the modern Cassandra books best. The narrator wasn't the best, sometimes it was confiusing on who was talking

I have always loved and enjoyed Clare’s books, UNTIL Trump was elected. I feel like a lot of authors lost their minds after this. Themes have been woven into storylines that never existed in them before, it reads awkwardly, unnaturally and is obvious what is going on.

The Dark Artifices featured a group of “supremacist” shadow hunters. Racism was named and used. This has never before been a theme in Clare’s books.

In Chain of Gold, the descriptive phrases used to describe Grace vs Cordelia are telling. Grace, being white and blonde is described as cold. While Cordelia, well it would take me a long time to list all the positive phrases used for her.

Sebastian was blonde and pale and evil.

I get it, Clare doesn’t like white folks. Which is fine, I don’t like her anymore either.

I am very impressed by this book. I loved all of the different relationships that were happening all at once, although I don't like Grace or Tatiana Blacktorn at all, they are both up to something. Anyway I loved learning about Cordelia and Alistair as well. I also liked the flashback-type passages that were strewn throughout the book, it was different and it helped me to learn more about the different characters. I liked that the main group felt like a group and not like a couple main people and then a few sidekicks. It felt like each character's story was able to be told--although I wish thalere had been a little more about Christopher Lightwood, I never really got to hear from his perspective. Anyway I very much enjoyed reading this newest Shadowhunter installment and I can't wait to see what happens next!

I absolutely adore this new series! I hope it is a long one. I cannot get enough of this world and these characters. I love how the older characters played a big enough part that we felt like we got to really spend some time with them even though they weren't the focus of the story. I have already fallen for these new characters well!
