About this audiobook

'Vita set her jaw, and nodded at New York City in greeting, as a boxer greets an opponent before a fight.' Fresh off the boat from England, Vita Marlowe has a job to do. Her beloved grandfather Jack has been cheated out of his home and possessions by a notorious conman with Mafia connections. Seeing Jack's spirit is broken, Vita is desperate to make him happy again, so she devises a plan to outwit his enemies and recover his home. She finds a young pickpocket, working the streets of the city. And, nearby, two boys with highly unusual skills and secrets of their own are about to be pulled into her lawless, death-defying plan. Katherine Rundell's fifth novel is a heist as never seen before - the story of a group of children who will do anything to right a wrong.

I loved this book! Comradery, intrigue, a quest, and danger; all of the makings of a great adventure story.

Set in Manhattan in the 1920's, readers get a look at what life is like on the streets, in the circus, and for the rich and powerful, as well for those who are poor and taken advantage of. It's for the last that Vita fought for. Her grandfather has been cheated out of his cherished home and everything in it, leaving him with nothing but $200 to build a new life on. Vita and her mom come from England to convince him to come home with them, but when Vita sees the light gone from her granfather's eyes and hears the sordid tale, she knows she has to do something, for him. A watcher and a planner by nature, she recruits a ragtag bunch of other kids with spirits for adventure and loyalty to help her to take back what was stolen.

The Good Thieves is targed for middle grade or young readers, but, I, as an adult, loved it. The writing style isn't like that of many children's books where it might be hard to get into, rather it's captivating and easy to get lost in. I actually listened to the audio book version, something I rarely do because of a condition I have that makes it painful to have headphones in. I'd have to have the volume very low to lessen the pain, for one, plus physically they just don't fit properly in my ears and it becomes painful before long. And as I don't drive, I couldn't listen to it in the car. So I had to find time where I could listen to it out loud, without the headphones, which wasn't always easy. I figured that, whenever I didn't have the chance, I'd switch to the ebook. However Margaret Cabourn-Smith made the characters come alive in her reading, in the different voices she did and appropriate accents for different characters. She had great pace and modulation. I just couldn't bring myself to read the book on my own when I didn't have a chance to listen. I felt I would ruin it. I've always preferred to read a book in hardcopy but she really made me reconsider audiobooks.

I really feel this book (and the narration if you listen to the audiobook version) deserves 5 stars.

the first thing that made me pick it up, was the beautiful cover (the one with the kids on the boat). It was very differnt than I was expecting but it was pretty great. It got a little slow, but picked up soon after.

Entertaining book by a favorite author. Rundell creates interesting characters and puts them in unusual situations. I did not like this one as much as Explorer, though. The story is a little sluggish in the 3rd quarter, but picks up with a strong finish at the end.
