About this audiobook

The New York Times bestselling debut book of poetry from Lana Del Rey, Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass.

Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is the title poem of the book and the first poem I wrote of many. Some of which came to me in their entirety, which I dictated and then typed out, and some that I worked laboriously picking apart each word to make the perfect poem. They are eclectic and honest and not trying to be anything other than what they are and for that reason I’m proud of them, especially because the spirit in which they were written was very authentic.” —Lana Del Rey

Lana’s breathtaking first book solidifies her further as “the essential writer of her times” (The Atlantic). The collection features more than thirty poems, many exclusive to the book: Never to Heaven, The Land of 1,000 Fires, Past the Bushes Cypress Thriving, LA Who Am I to Love You?, Tessa DiPietro, Happy, Paradise Is Very Fragile, Bare Feet on Linoleum, and many more. This beautiful hardcover edition showcases Lana’s typewritten manuscript pages alongside her original photography. The result is an extraordinary poetic landscape that reflects the unguarded spirit of its creator.

Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is also brought to life in an unprecedented spoken word audiobook which features Lana Del Rey reading fourteen select poems from the book accompanied by music from Grammy Award–winning musician Jack Antonoff.

Released right on time. Lana has her finger on the pulse of the universe, and it shows. In 39 mins I laughed, cried and contemplated my role in the world.

Mostly it’s 39 mins of being in Elizabeth’s head. Dreams do come true. I cannot wait for the written version.

Cried through the whole thing. Went through the five stages of grief and somehow ended up happily satisfied by the last chapter... Lana outdid herself.

Absolutely mesmerizing! You have to listen to this if you can. Lana brings such a great mood to your listening experience. Her voice is like butter and the words flow like water. I was entranced while listening. I clicked on this randomly and I’m so glad I did. You could fall asleep listening to this. Beautiful!

Wasn’t particularly drawn to the words on the text when I first skimmed through this book in passing at a bookstore (perhaps due to the formatting choices that were taken) but as an audiobook, a certain mood, a level of clarity and longing is achieved that I particularly enjoyed and simply vibed with from beginning to end. A great way to end the night — in thought. ??✨

I've listened many poetry reading, and I have to say that this is yet the most heartfelt and soothing one I've come across. The way Lana corporates poems and music hypnotizes me . Truly a masterpiece.

It was always clear that she can write poetry. Not excellent poetry, but some really raw and good nontheless. She is extremly direct, which maybe is just a personal complaint of mine, and not a flaw of the writing( from what i have seen this is the trend of today). I really love to see how some parts of the poema found their way on the albums

Objectively good in the sense that Lana uses language and good prose that are identifiably hers but this, like her music, is just not for me. You’ll probably absolutely love this if you are a fan of her work though.
