The Adventures Of Knobby And Maddie Duck
()
About this ebook
Then there is Little Missy Duck who was left behind by her duck family because she didn't know how to fly. She was very sad and left alone in the middle of Little Lake. Knobby and Maddie heard her sad tale - then decided to teach her how to fly. She practiced very hard every day, flapping her wings over and over, the way Knobby and Maddie told her to do. She finally found herself up above the water and was so surprised that she fell down in a big splash. She knew then just what to do to fly up in the air, and just in time too because the mean bunch of ducks were headed her way. They came every day just to taunt and tease her because she couldn't fly. As they came closer she suddenly began flapping her wings very fast and slowly flew up into the air. Her tormenters were so surprised, they just watched in awe as she flew away heading for the invisible trail that would lead her to her family.
There is Redneck, who gets his name from having his neck in a constant state of redness from other ducks pecking his neck when he's being pesty and to put him in his place.
There is Baby Duck, who befriends an alligator. Who everyone thinks he is mean, but Baby discovers that he is just lonesome and wants to make friends, but whenever he shows up - all the ducks run away. Baby names him Albert and to everyone's amazement - Baby jumps on Albert's back and he takes her for a ride.
There is Limpy, who only has one leg. When he was little, he never listened to Mother or Father Duck and would go off on his own - no matter how dangerous. One day he swam close to where the Mean Old Alligator was always seen......and The Mean Old Alligator bit off his foot. After that, he had to hop around, but he could still fly like the wind.

CHAPTER ONE
MADDIE DUCK
The lake ahead looked like a mirror as it reflected the little puffy clouds above Maddie as she swam through the still warm water. Her paddling left a perfect V behind her as she swam. Maddie was the only one on the lake this beautiful morning. The only sounds around were of the many other little birds twittering and flying around above her head. After their long night of sleep, they flew high and wide dipping down now and then to grab a bug or take a sip of the precious water. Maddie always admired this about the little birds. She could fly, but not like they could. She had to take a running start and then with her wings spread very wide, she would be lifted up into the air, but she couldn’t dip down to the water and then soar up again like the little birds could – she wished she could, but she knew she couldn’t.
Maddie liked swimming the best because she could stop and visit the many places where big people would throw all kinds of wonderful tasting things on the grass for her and the rest of her family and friends to eat.
This was going to be a very adventurous day, she thought, as she swam through the water. She held her head up high above her long graceful neck. She looked around wondering where everyone was. Maddie had spent the night sleeping in a little patch of weeds at the far end of the lake. She woke up early to the sounds of squawking from her Geese cousins who were flying overhead and on their way North for the summer.
Maddie was a beautiful duck, as duck standards go. She had a long white neck that blended with her black and white wings. Her body was so black that it shimmered a beautiful iridescent blue in the sun. The big people didn’t think she or any of her relatives or friends were beautiful, though. She always heard them say, Oh, my goodness! What an ugly duck!
She could never understand why they said that because she knew she was beautiful because she felt so beautiful. She always had felt especially beautiful ever since she was a tiny duckling, swimming in line along with the rest of her family. That meant that she had to be beautiful and that’s that, she thought. Even Knobby Duck, with his big bulbous nose was beautiful, she thought.
Mother Duck had hatched thirteen little ducklings, which were now almost one year old. Each one had grown very fast since last spring and now were too big to stay with Mother Duck. Maddie and each one of her brothers and sisters were finally on their own. They still visited from time to time and they were always very glad to see Mother and Father Duck.
Where was everyone, she thought? The sun was already lighting up the sky. Suddenly she caught sight of her friends. Here they came, one by one out of the tall grasses that lined the lake. They all slipped quietly into the water.
There was Red Neck, swimming way ahead of everyone else. He got his name by being so difficult to get along with. When he got too disagreeable or uppity, someone in the group would give him a sharp peck on the neck. This kept his neck in a constant state of redness. He didn’t care – he was sort of proud of his mark of distinction.
Maddie looked over and saw that Miss Covy Duck and Mr Covy Duck were swimming side by side. They were never apart. Mr Covy would chase anyone away who even came near his love Miss Covy. He flapped his wings very hard to warn the others to stay away. Maddie thought that was so wonderful. She hoped that some day she would meet someone who would care as much for her as Mr Covy cared for Miss Covy.
There was Little Duck and Lady Duck looking over the available males in the group. After all, it was spring again, and love was in the air. Maddie didn’t see anyone that she was interested in because she was already in love with someone and he was nowhere around. She was in love with Knobby Duck. Even though he was different from the rest, with his oversized red bulbous nose, she thought that he was beautiful – just like she was.
Maddie swam faster to catch up with the rest. She liked being alone most of the time, but lately she was getting the strangest, restless feeling. Even though she preferred to sleep by herself each night in her little cove at the end of the lake, she could hardly wait till morning when she would swim across the lake to meet the rest of her friends. She was especially happy when she would see Knobby in the crowd.
Maddie was finally getting closer. There was Whitey, Limpy, Midnight and Ringer, but no Knobby. Maddie searched the banks of the lake, but there was no sign of Knobby. The rest of the group swam on ahead leaving Maddie behind. Now she was getting worried. It was the first time that Knobby was missing from the group of male ducks – they always stayed together.
Maddie caught up with Poppy Duck, who was the oldest of the unattached males. She asked if he had seen Knobby or if he knew where he was. Poppy Duck said that Knobby did not come with the rest at sundown last night. They were all worried that something terrible had happened to him. The Mean Old Alligator was still sneaking around at night – maybe Knobby got
