    Seeking to maintain her hard-won autonomy, Analiz's independence as a expat businesswoman in Mexico is threatened by her adult children's expectations and demands that she live a "conventional" life... and by Analiz' own increasing debility as an aging woman. While thematically, both the expat life (and cultural integration) and female independence have been interwoven in novels before, adding the very real issues of inevitable physical decline makes Old Is A 4-Letter Word, and the subsequent "Analiz Novels" something unique. Avoiding the obvious plot device of some catastrophic or unlikely event (a murder, for example), Stockton manages to build an entertaining, readable, and wise tale around the more likely, and more immediately recognizable dramas of ordinary life. Less an "expat novel" than a celebration of independence while accepting the realities of old age, Stockton's "Analiz Novels" deserved a larger audience. However, having been convinced that the setting (Mazatlán, a popular retirement home for middle-class Americans and Canadians), limited readership to a small audience, Stockton originally self-published. Modestly (and mistakenly) believing the only audience was aging women like herself, the author further insisted on printing the books in large print. Besides the limited exposure the novels received, the publisher was unable to handle the author's printing specifications without breaking "Old is a 4-Letter Word" into two volumes, creating a second novel out of the latter part of the first, and with the second simply including entire chapters of the first novel. Based on the original manuscripts, the two first novels of what became a five-novel series, have been restored as the novel the author intended.
