Dog Massage - Maryjean Ballner
Introduction
Welcome to the wonderful world of Dog Massage!
If the idea seems silly or a bit quirky, keep reading. I assure you that soon you will be delighted. Within these pages are hours of fascinating styles of touch. Included are more than fifty time-tested and dog-approved massage techniques.
Extensive research indicates that while you will probably like them, your dog will surely love them. And your dog will love you even more for learning them.
We don’t speak basic bark,
so the best nonverbal way we communicate with our dogs is through touch, and the best possible touch is massage.
Many people pet by randomly rubbing—the absentminded stroking of Dog’s back while talking on the phone, or scratching Dog’s head during television commercials.
I offer you something more valuable than dog petting—Dog Massage. Traditional Swedish massage techniques have been adapted for your canine’s comfort. Since you already pet your dog, you already know the basics.
As a New York State Licensed Massage Therapist, I originally developed these techniques for feline friends, in Cat Massage. Now they’ve been fine-tuned for canine companions. Dog Massage can revolutionize the way you touch your dog.
If you were offered the choice between getting petted and getting massaged, which would you choose? Massage, of course, and so would your dog.
Your touch becomes much more interesting when it becomes massage:
Hand Over Hand and Down We Go! replaces routine strokes along the back.
Waving Down the Neckline upgrades neck rubs, and Petting the Pecs works the mighty chest muscles.
Your touch takes on new delights with Belly Browsing and Tiptoeing Through the Toes.
Check Out Those Cheeks has brought a smile to many canine faces.
Expect a few Doggy Giggles with the Underarm Tickle and Dog Sandwich.
And don’t forget your dog’s tail end with Tail End.
The positive response to Dog Massage is overwhelming! An expert panel of canines assisted me throughout this book. Small, medium, and large-size breeds were consulted, and each offered their expertise. Their Canine Critiques guided and fine-tuned these techniques.
Speaking of Canine Critiques, let’s paws for a moment to talk about Unfriendly Feedback and Friendly Feedback signals.
Unfriendly Feedback tells you to be respectful of your dog’s response to massage. There are some canines who have been bred for their defensive nature, and prefer to not be touched. Other dogs simply don’t care for it.
Know your dog’s behavior and temperament before you offer any massage.
Friendly Feedback says that your dog appreciates your touch and you. When tail wagging becomes excessive, call it Power Wagging. Body Flopping becomes a familiar sight. Satisfied Snoring, Nasal Torpedoes, and Doggy Grins all encourage more massage.
As you upgrade dog petting to Dog Massage, you will notice a distinct improvement in your touch. You will enjoy it, and your dog will be thrilled. This book demonstrates simple enhancements to transform your petting to magical touch.
The following pages contain an easy-to-learn, whiskers-to-tail guide to massage techniques that can revolutionize the way you touch your
