      Chapter One: Introduction

      Lord of the Flies by William Golding revolves around the theme of human nature: individual welfare versus the common good. This book by this Nobel Prize winning British author is regarded as one of the all time best novels in English language.

      The book was published in 19554 and it was the first novel written by William Golding. When it was published, it did not get much success and less than 3000 copies were sold in the United States during 1955. Soon the book gained popularity and it became a best seller.

      By the early 1960s the academic circles recognized the potential of the book and it was required reading in many schools and colleges. In most of the English Speaking countries, Lord of the Flies is prescribed in the course of studies. Lord of the Flies was adapted to a film in 1963 by Peter Brook. In 1990 Harry Hook produced the second version of the film based on Lord of the Flies.

      William Golding was profoundly affected by the experience in the Second World War. He realized the extent of evil that humanity was capable of. When the World War was over, William Golding resumed teaching. He involved himself in writing novels. His first and greatest success came with Lord of the Flies (1954), which ultimately became a bestseller in both Britain and the United States after more than twenty publishers rejected it.

      The success of Lord of the Flies helped William Golding financially and he retired from teaching and devoted himself fully to writing. His other famous novel is Pincher Martin which was published in 1956. His play The Brass Butterfly came in 1958 and it was very successful.

      It is true that none of his works matched the success of Lord of the Flies, but his other works were also highly regarded by readers, reviewers, and critics. William Golding remained a highly respected and distinguished writer for the rest of his life.

      William Golding was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983. He breathed his last in 1993. He is regarded as one of the most acclaimed authors of the second half of the 20th century.

      Lord of the Flies is a fictional creation but it is realistic in its approach because William Golding was the witness to the atrocities committed during the Second World War. The story of Lord of the Flies revolves around a group of English school boys. The boys are evacuated from the mainland but unfortunately their plane is shot down and the boys are stranded on an uninhabited island.

      The boys on the island are away from civilization, free from the rules, and free from the society. Some boys are pacifists and they behave properly but some are like savages and they descend into savagery. They are divided into groups.
