    About the Author

Franc Ogrinc earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of British Columbia and taught French, Spanish, German and ESL in B.C. public schools for over 20 years. His linguistic ability as a speaker of several languages and his experience with English as a Second Language (ESL), as both a student and an instructor gives him a unique perspective. His enthusiasm for languages has prompted him to develop this practical curriculum for use by teachers and students of ESL.

Prepositions indicate the relationship between things mentioned in a sentence. The use of prepositions is one of the most difficult parts of the English language for an ESL/EFL student. Ogrinc recognized the need to create a series of booklets to help the learner better understand the unusual logic in their application. By going through the exercises in these booklets, the student will understand and be able to correctly apply common prepositions in everyday language.

For further practice with English prepositions see the next Intermediate and Advanced level work books.

    To the ESL Student

Prepositions in this exercise booklet are used both as prepositions and as adverbs.

    Example:

The dog ran down the hill. (preposition)

The vase was knocked down. (adverb)

At the top of each page are the prepositions to be used on that particular page only. Some are used more than once. The structure and meaning of certain sentences would sometimes require other prepositions as well such as:

The child ran across (in, over, about, around, etc) the field.

The answers can be found in the back of the booklet.

For answers, click on the blue number of each section. To go back, do the same.
