About this ebook

The Funny Old World Collection, includes a wonderful mixture of humorous and tongue-in-cheek Poems (with a few Cartoons) as well as heart-felt Poetry inspired by Love and Nature. Some of the Poems are 'sheer imaginings' and some are based around real life events and people.

Martin Knebel creates Poems and Cartoons to delight and amuse. He combines an acute perception of the Human Condition with a warm and sometimes wicked sense of humour. 'A look at the world as I see it, mostly as a bit of a joke.'

    Introduction.

This is a collection of my Poems with a few of my Cartoons to add colour. I do not write for the poetry elite as I wish to communicate with ordinary people. John Betjeman is my hero.

My wish is to entertain and to throw a few bits of philosophy into your lap. I also love puncturing pomposity and the professions are fair game.

My earliest Poem, ‘The Stream’ was written in my early twenties. I was engaged in a survey of forests throughout England for the Forestry Commission and wrote it sitting on the banks of the North Tyne.

My second Poem ‘The Downs’ was written much later but refers to experiences between the ages of ten and fourteen when I spent marvellous carefree holidays with a gamekeeper and his family living in The Tower on the estate of Lord Gage in the shadow of Firle Beacon, near Lewes.

We then come to a section which is just humour. Most of these are sheer imaginings but some such as ‘The Cruise’, ‘Time Gentleman’, ‘Herbie of The Adjacent Gardens’, ‘The Rich are Making Savings’, ‘The Garden Party’, ‘German Requiem’, ‘Early and Late’, and ‘Irreplaceable Man’ are based on real people and incidents.

The next section is about Love and particularly my wife Mary. A number of these Poems were written for anniversaries. ‘Burning Desire’ describes how we met.

Poems about women follow in a Tongue in Cheek fashion. ‘She Recovered’ is true. ‘She Might Have Been a Lady’ and ‘The Garden Party’ are based on two of Mary’s friends. The two cartoons called ‘The Pharmacy’ illustrate the problems of young women in the Naval Town of Plymouth, Devon, who dress scantily even in the depths of winter.

We love France and have sailed down the Bay of Biscay many times. ‘Overheard in France’ and ‘A Nice Frenchman’ are based on real experiences. The Cartoon ‘Farewell to England’
