Chapter 1: The Fourth Coming
On February 17, 2013, Michael Jordan will be 50 years old.
On that day, Jordan will be the only 50-year-old on the active NBA roster.
And he will be the oldest player in the history of the game.
According to those who claim to have the inside track on Michael Jordan's deepest ambitions and mindset today, the man widely considered to be the greatest player in the history of basketball may not yet be finished with his storied legacy on the court.
The game of basketball has been everything to me,
Jordan said at his 2009 NBA Hall of Fame induction. My refuge. My place I've always gone when I needed to find comfort and peace. It's been a source of intense pain, and a source of most intense feelings of joy and satisfaction. And one that no one can even imagine.
Although I'm recognized with this tremendous honor of being in the basketball Hall of Fame - I don't look at this moment as a defining end to my relationship with the game of basketball,
he said. It's simply a continuation of something that I started a long time ago. One day you might look up and see me playing the game at 50. Oh don't laugh. Never say never. Because limits, like fears are often just an illusion.
The Absence of a Challenge
Michael Jordan's love of - if not obsession with - challenging himself to reach lofty goals is legendary and, quite frankly, difficult for most people to completely understand.
But since retiring from the NBA for a third time almost ten years ago, Michael Jordan has largely fallen short of finding the challenge he needs in order to be fulfilled.
Despite what many incorrectly believe to be true about him, Michael Jordan doesn't need people to have faith in him.
He needs them to have doubts.
It was the drive to overcome doubters, perception, and limited expectations that always made Michael Jordan a superhuman athlete capable of feats few ever have or ever will achieve again.
During his NBA Hall of Fame induction speech, Jordan spent less time emphatically thanking his supporters and more time applauding his critics for the career he ultimately went on to enjoy.
To the coach who cut him from the team while still just a North Carolina schoolboy, I wanted to make sure you understood: You made a mistake, dude,
Jordan said.
Addressing Isiah Thomas, who supposedly orchestrated a freezeout
of Jordan during his first All-Star
