    Victor

    Victor!

Victor cringed at the sound of his mother’s voice calling to him. A hard hand landed on his shoulder and he turned to see his friend, Benno von Rothbart, grinning at him.

Looks like you’re in trouble again, Siegfried.

If I am, I’m sure it has something to do with you, Victor said. Benno only laughed as Victor’s mother’s footsteps neared.

There you are! she exclaimed, pushing through the trees. What are you up to?

Victor and Benno both lifted the bows into the air, as if it should be obvious.

Oh. Well. Victor’s mom had never been a fan of hunting, and preferred to ignore her son’s favorite pastime rather than acknowledge what was distasteful to her—although if pressed she would admit it made her happy they used bows rather than guns. They’d learned bows as boys from Victor’s grandpa, and both still preferred them. Listen, I’m planning your welcome home party, and I need your input for the invitee list.

Benno, who’d stepped behind Victor’s mom, waggled his eyebrows. Victor was hard pressed not to roll his eyes. "Mom, we both know that no matter who I tell you to invite, or no matter how many times I request you keep it small, you’re going to invite everyone in town, and it’s going to be the social event of the season. His mother preened beneath his words, and Victor again had to refrain from eye-rolling. As much as his mother despised his hunting, he despised her parties. Just do what you want to do, and tell me when to show up."

"Fine. But don’t complain if I do invite everyone since you refuse to participate in the planning, Victor." She stomped away as if angry, though Victor knew her well enough to know she was in her absolute element, and any input from him would be nothing more than interference.

You know she’s just looking to find you a wife, Benno said.

She can try all she likes, Victor said. I have no desire to settle down just yet. I just got home, for pete’s sake! I’m only twenty, hardly a ‘spinster,’ or whatever the word is for old, unmarried men. Why can’t she just let me enjoy life for a while?

Benno clapped him on the shoulder again. "College for the past two-and-a-half years since you graduated high school isn’t exactly un-enjoyable."

I was going to school, Rothbart, not just screwing around.

Benno lifted his hands innocently. "I didn’t claim you were doing that," he laughed.

Victor punched him in the shoulder. You haven’t changed at all, have you, Rothbart?

A funny look crossed Benno’s face, but he only smiled. You wouldn’t have it any other way, Siegfried, and you know it. Now, what’re we hunting today?

    Benno

Benno pulled an arrow from his quiver and fixed it at the nocking point. Pulling the string taut, he aimed for the dead center of Victor’s back. As if he felt it, Victor suddenly froze in place, shoulders pulled tight. Slowly, incrementally, he turned toward Benno. Just before he got to the point where he could see, Benno quickly pulled the arrow up and let it fly, hitting a bird dead center. Victor whipped back around in time to see the bird fall.

He glanced back at Benno, a questioning look on his face. He studied him for long seconds before saying, A bird, Rothbart? Kinda small to be shooting, isn’t it?

Benno laughed. "True. But the point is that I can shoot something so small. You’re right, let’s go find some bigger prey."

He continued to smile at Victor until he finally smiled back and turned to lead the way. Benno’s smile fell.

    Fool.

The sun nearly dipped below the horizon. Benno crouched in the bushes, watching the pond. The sunlight glinted oddly off the surface, shooting sparks of blue, green, and purple into the air. The swan swam into view, nearing the shore. Benno held his breath. This was his favorite part.

The swan, entirely ebony in color, reached the shore and waddled out. It moved over to the pile of clothing that lay on the ground—also black. Benno felt it appropriate as it matched the black heart of the swan. The sun finally slid beneath the horizon, and the moon, already partway into the sky, shone down on the pond and the black swan.

Light sparkled off the swan at the contact, making the swan appear to glow. The glow grew until even Benno had to look away. In that instant, the swan transformed. Benno glanced back in time to see the young woman scoop the pile of clothing against herself.

    Pervert! she spat at Benno.

He stood and grinned at her, unperturbed. Nothing I haven’t seen before, Odile.

Not by my choice, she said, slipping into the dress and fastening it quickly. You said you were going to fix this, Rothbart. Why am I still turning into the vile creature?

I’m working on it, he said nonchalantly.

"You’ve been working on it for months! What kind of magician can’t even undo his own spell? I’ll tell you what kind—the kind who doesn’t really possess much magic. Who would’ve thought you of all people
