    Introduction

Most of us struggle with our health, to a certain extent, even if we say that we are generally healthy. I used to keep getting colds for example and sometimes my skin was really dry and sore on the back of my hands. I have also struggled with my weight. As with most people this has become more of a problem as I have gotten older. There were also some days that I just didn’t seem to have the energy to do anything. Some weeks have been a problem in particular and those are when I am on holiday and away from the usual stresses of work. It is terrible being tired when you are on holiday because it stops you doing all of the things that make life pleasurable. Who wouldn’t rather be more awake, full of life and free from those niggling little conditions? Well, this book is all about getting your body working the best that it can. Little did I know a few years ago that the first step towards this new healthy paradigm was to drink just one green smoothie a day.

The normal diet that people eat these days shows little resemblance to the food that our ancestors would have eaten in the early stages of human existence. We are used to a world of plenty where as our ancestors had to make do with what they could find. Meat was something that would have been very irregular so people would have relied upon the various leaves and fruits that they could find. Certainly they would have consumed far more vegetation than we currently have in our modern diets. There can be great benefits gained from increasing the amount of green leaves and fruits in our diets. Vegetables add valuable roughage to our diet which enables the digestive system to work the way nature intended. This in itself will help us feel better as well as helping to avoid such modern diseases as bowl cancer. The green leaves that we consume also provide valuable nutrients in the form of minerals and vitamins. As well as this, leaves are low in fats. This is good because excess fats from meats and dairy produce are the curse of the modern Western diet. This is the reason that so many people in the West struggle with maintaining a healthy weight.

One of the main problems with increasing your intake of leafy greens is that they appear to be so dull compared to all of the other high fat foods that surround us from day to day. Who wouldn’t be tempted to have a juicy steak or a cheese pie rather than a stick of celery and a leaf from a cabbage? Green smoothies solve this problem by combining the natural green aspect of leaves with the natural flavours and sweetness of fruits. Fruits such as bananas or mangoes can add much needed flavour to your green smoothie. Once the fruit is all mixed up with the greens in the smoothie you will just have an overall flavour to deal with, and so long as this is pleasant you haven’t got to think about the dull taste of such things as spinach or broccoli.

The other thing about eating a whole lot of green leaves and other raw vegetation is that you will have to chew them a lot in order to get the nutrients out of them. Animals that eat only leaves have to spend a whole lot of their time just chewing and re-chewing their food, before they swallow it, so that they can get all of the good stuff out
