    Preface

    Hitting Bottom

I was sitting at my computer. My tender, sore red eyes glazed over the streaming incoming e-mails, promising me a fortune if I would only open the message. Each e-mail that crossed the screen screamed for my attention, captivating my imagination of what could be. I felt a sharp pain in the pit of my stomach, my palms began to sweat, and a frightening chill of anxiety shaking my entire body suddenly overcame me.

If I would only invest another $5000.00 in just one more success system, all of my money problems would be solved and my life would forever be changed for the better. I couldn’t stop reading the 30 page sales letter, each paragraph tempting me like a forbidden mistress. The anxiety of decision-making intensified as I continued to read sensational stories of people who became immensely successful, almost overnight, buying, reading, listening, and being coached by an elusive guru speaking to them like an electronic county fair barker.

My dilemma was real. I had bought what seemed like every self-help book ever published. I attended seminars on everything from neuro-linguistic programming to Google Ad Words to Internet Marketing. Yet my definition of success still eluded me. And yet, I was once again faced with a compelling urge to uncover the secret of success I was sorely missing that would finally vault me into becoming a millionaire, and then be happy forever. It was impossible to stop reading and impossible to begin all over again. I had jumped for so many empty promises, and yet here I was falling again. Only this time I was in a downward spiral into despair and confusion. Did I really know enough to trust myself? Or would one more guarantee of success finally make me the fortune I’ve been desperately seeking? In that moment, I realized that this was more than a dilemma of making the right decision. My pursuit of the next best thing was effectively blocking out any other problems that might have shown up in my life. Could this be more than an obsession? Was I addicted to the pursuit?

On one hand, entrepreneurship can be addictive in a good sense. Entrepreneurs need passion, enthusiasm, and a driving will to succeed. On the other hand, when passion, money, fortune, and fame drive us toward addictive thinking that affects other areas of our life negatively, we have lost control. When we doubt our own unique abilities to accomplish our passion, fear of

failure begins to flood our conscious decision-making process. We begin to crave distractions to numb the time.

I had a choice to make. Do I succumb to the words of enticement and the assurances made yet again, or do I step away from the promises flashing on the screen and make the decision to use what I already know to create my own success?

As in any addiction, change happens when you hit bottom.

    Introduction

There are thousands of books on entrepreneurship. Why should you read this one?

The entrepreneur is portrayed in our popular culture as the one guy in a million who makes it big by inventing the next pet rock or high tech gadget. Yet there are thousands, if not millions, of people each year who get sucked into the notion that you can just quit your job down at the local burger joint, put up a website, and presto, you’re rich.

Financial independence isn’t really like that. The media glorifies those who have wealth as the only measure of success. Yet, there are many other measures of true success I will share with you in this book.

If your net worth exceeds a million dollars, this book may not be for you. On the other hand, every person who makes a million wants to make two million, then four million, and then ten million. So there’s still room to grow. If you’re at that point in your life where you’ve worked really hard for someone else and now you’ve got that itch to go it alone or ascend to the next level of success, you’ll enjoy the common sense approach of

    Addictive Entrepreneurship.

Addictive Entrepreneurship is not a pie-in-the-sky, get-rich-quick elixir. Rather, a guided business meditation where you weigh both sides of critical success principles and discover how to use the character traits you already have to make brilliant choices – without getting emotionally distracted.

I’ll take you on a realistic journey as we explore what it takes mentally, emotionally, and spiritually to succeed as an entrepreneur today. This path does not lead up the corporate ladder or present a simplistic view of being your own boss. Instead it paints life’s business lessons in shades of courage, persistence, creativity, and honesty.

Addictive Entrepreneurship stipulates that while having a positive mental attitude is essential to your personal success, you have to understand that this type of business life has its own unique set of challenges, its own set of ups and downs. When you’re ready, willing, and able to internalize and explore these choices and their rewards, you’re ready for entrepreneurship. Until then, don’t give up your day job.

Addictive thinking is a distorted way of viewing reality. For example, one young man was procrastinating, turning in a report to his client.

Why don’t you finish it? asked his assistant.

    It is finished, he answered.

Then why haven’t you submitted it to me to give to your client?

Because I need to do some more work on it.

But I thought you just said it was finished?

    It is, he said.

While this may appear illogical to you, entrepreneurs with addictive thinking say things like this all the time. To them it is perfectly logical that something can be finished
