    2011 OVERVIEW

The entire period from 2008 to 2012 is one of huge change on a worldwide and personal level. Planetary influences that have been in affect since the late 90s are now coming fully to a close, and by 2012, we will be truly be living in a new era, leaving the past decade behind us. Generational shifts don’t happen overnight, and this 4 year period is a moment of transition, when the era-defining planets of Chiron, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto all slowly shift to new signs, often retrograding to their previous placements, before going full-speed ahead into the future.

It is for this reason that, ever since 2008, individually and as a society, we have been transitioning to a new way of being while still trying to cling onto the old ways of the last decade. The naughties were in a way just that – much ado about nothing, a period of fear, anxiety, bubbles and bursts. Uranus and Neptune were both in mutual reception – that is when two signs are in each other’s rulers – and that is a very rare event for slow-movers like these. During this time, these planets’ energies were somehow crossed, bringing out the worst in each other. Neptune in Aquarius brought about confusion caused by revolutions in technology and globalization, while Uranus in Pisces led to an era defined by fear, judgment and clinging to security, as opposed to building and expanding the world.

It is this planetary energy that, on a world level, led to the engagement in multiple wars out of the need for security, when war is always destabilizing. It is also what kept us involved in these conflicts with no clear exit strategy, out of a fear of what would happen if we left. It was an era of staying in bad situations, rather than facing the unknown.

On a more personal level, many people, too, became involved in fear-led relationships where the need for stability overruled the deeper desire for romance and big love. The last decade was a period of Stepford suburban family values, filled with Mean Girls and Desperate Housewives. Many women may have felt the pressure to keep up the appearance of having a perfect domestic life, not for herself, but to avoid the judgment of other women. It seemed like men and women were living separate lives within incredibly suffocating and soulless relationships – with the men forced off to the sidelines seeking out bromance with the boys while women ruled the roost trying to claim their spot as the alpha-female of domestic bliss.

In 2011, Uranus and Neptune both move into signs that are much better suited to their natural energy. Uranus, a planet that likes surprise and action, is moving into adventurous Aries. A new-found enthusiasm will take root, and the need to try new things. Aries is highly individualistic, and after many years of living in a judgmental society of bullies and holier-than-thou mommy culture, people will be more interested in living their lives in order to achieve their own aims, without caring what others will think.

Neptune also shifts to Pisces, it’s ruler. This is a lovely, romantic and artistic energy. A need for an almost transcendental harmony will take over, as well as a new-found idealism. Love will make a comeback, and people will opt for the messiness of true love over the confines of proper choices. This can also herald a new era for the arts, where poetry and big questions about the meaning of life are the rage, as opposed to the quiet slice-of-life insights of daily routine that have been the focus in the recent past.

Pluto’s entry into business-and-government-minded Capricorn occurred in late 2008 and continues through 2011. Our relationship to money and power will continue to transform. The economy will not fix itself overnight, but we are moving through a period of tearing down stagnant institutions in favor of something more democratic. It is a time for power to be distributed laterally, rather than from the top down.

Finally, Chiron enters Pisces this year, giving us the ability to look inside ourselves to discover the psychological roots of our ills and slay our demons once and for all.

These new energies may unfold slowly and subtly, but we are entering a really exciting new era, filled with change and discovery. A decade of fear, judgment and paranoia is over, and it’s a time for courage and action – for energy to flow freely. We can make things happen by willingly charging forth into chaos. After the cowardly stagnancy of the past years, that is a very refreshing thing, indeed.

On a personal level, as well, people are going to be ready to shake things up. Many have been clinging to elements of their lives out of a misplaced need for security, as opposed
