    I've read science fiction and fantasy since my early teens. I even taught myself speed reading at the age of fourteen so I could "consume" more science fiction. For many years of my life, I read a complete book a day. It's only recently that I've come to realize how much of my education was dependent upon science fiction from the political/economic insights of Asimov's Foundation Trilogy to the hard science fiction that laid the groundwork for a subsequent degree in math and physics. I love the optimism of Star Trek and the weirdness of Zelazny. I hope to add some of both to my books.

      Lady awoke with a grin, albeit a doggy grin, and squirmed around in a tight circle on her back to get at an itchy spot that awoke with her. It was barely light out but she knew she had to hurry to catch breakfast. She stretched carefully, as old dogs will do, and made her way from the concrete structure that housed two large air conditioning units in the middle of the campus of Midwestern Missouri University.
