I’M DONE WONDERING - MIAMI
Flying scares me, but landing makes me jump out of my skin. The only thing for me to do right now is brace for our inevitable demise. I squeeze Matt’s hand so hard I think I heard a bone crack. Have to look straight, always straight. I have no choice in the matter; glints of sunlight reflecting off the Atlantic Ocean force me to look at the back of this shitty headrest. Great! How the fuck is this pattern going to help? There’s no face, no signaling gesture to warn me of imminent danger. I need to see them. Savor their zombie-like stare, and know everything is ok in the world.
Their ennui gives me peace. Something similar to how birds fly in flocks: one moves to the right, they all move to the right. Right now at this very instant I’m tranquil - flying straight - mindless like the rest. But one swift frantic jerk from any of these fuckers might just make my heart explode. So I give into the absurdity than rather have it rush upon me by surprise.
I let it overtake me.
I become some kind of sycophant for death and his many, many ways to cause a serious case of dead. I imagine how passenger 22C would probably yelp like a hungry Pomeranian as he witnesses the inside of the plane turn into a fiery cylinder. Or how passenger 24D’s nonplus expression as he examines the metal beam impaled in his chest would trouble me for years.
But before my imagination overwhelms me, I close my eyes and try to relax; listening to the jets’ hum get louder as we push pass the beach, towards the airport.
My hand falls from my husband’s hold and it instinctively latches on to the armrest. Bearing down into my seat, I try to make myself one with the plane, literally digging my nails into the armrest. I try to find solace in the darkness of my closed eyes. Searching for something to comfort me, console me in some philosophical way, but can’t find it. Though something finds me, pulling me into a familiar void, where I can feel the enormity of its vastness. I disappear in its crushing weight, gasping for grounding, for simple normalcy. But just then, right at the moment when hope becomes ether, I hear him, whispering softly in my ear, There’s nothing to worry about now. We are almost there, Clarise
I want you to hold me tight,
I said as I let my clammy hand reach for his warm big hands.
Look at you. So nervous.
I am. But I’m also soo wet.
Yes, I noticed that.
No. Not that…
I shook my head, looking at him the way he liked - sidelong with a devilish grin.
I want everyone to see the way I want you,
he said as he leaned towards me.
Our lips locked together, nudging back any noise or light trying to force its way in to what we’ve created - a kind of globe falling through space. And as I was dropping from the world, a forceful jolt yanked my eyes open. The airplane violently shook as it landed on the strip.
This is it, I thought, this is fucking it!
Impending sudden doom, I lurched forward, wishing to get swallowed by him, but I’m halted by the waist. Anticipating death made me wet, horny, and a bit confused. Because suddenly I’m aware of my surroundings. We’re not in a fiery ball of flames or being torn up by metal beams. We’re all safe on the plane, especially my neighbor who just coughed. I pushed off Alex, smiling like a naughty high school girl. Alex simply smirked at him as to say wouldn’t you want some
.
Thankfully the pilot’s crackling voice interrupted the awkwardness, "Welcome to Miami, folks. It’s a beautiful sunny
