About this ebook
Jerry is in court to fight a minor disturbing the peace charge that occurred during his one-man protest against the increasing authoritarianism when the courtroom is seized by a different sort of protestor; a man with bombs wanting to publicize the damage done to his family by some of our crooked institutions. Along with Jerry and his friend Richie, Judge Durastein, the arresting officer Crowder and Jerry's attorney Veronica are kept as hostages during negotiations with the police. Thinking that fellow protestor Jerry could best communicate with Forbin, he is sent on a mission to work up the Stockholm Syndrome with their captor. But Jerry cannot resist using the massive media coverage to broadcast his own protest to the public, and that offends Forbin because, except the harm the system has done to him and his family, he is a true blue patriot. This leads to much squabbling among the hostages until the Stockholm Syndrome works its magic on them.

The general consensus is that change is urgent. Yet those claiming to work toward that end choose illusory paths that serve more as an impediment to the change they profess to seek. It is a closed loop -- a path that follows itself -- a safe at home tour rather than an expedition in search of wherever. My plays attempt to untangle the complex knots created by repeated trips to nowhere by focusing on the fearful simplicity of uncontaminated life where acceptance and rejection meet to hash out what's bothering them.

(Before opening one person walks on stage carrying a chair and an American flag. The person says: And now our national anthem.
The anthem begins (just the music). The anthem stops the moment he is seated. The person shrugs his shoulders, gets up, and leaves with flag and chair)
(Scene: Typical municipal court room where minor offenses are adjudicated. Cast: Jerry Pulaski – Charged with disturbing the peace and disorderly conduct during a protest. Richie DiOrio – A friend of Jerry's, there for a minor MV violation. Judge Alison Durastein. Veronica Doyle – Defense attorney. Officer Ronald Crowder – Arresting officer. Forbin C. Mausbruder (Mossbrudder) – Intruder. Voice of Chief Landry, Bailiff, Others. Jerry enters courtroom carrying a sign on a pole with the message not visible. His friend Richie is already present.)
RICHIE: Jerry!...It is you! I saw Pulaski at the top of the list and was wondering: Could this be my fucked-up friend?!
JERRY: Hey, Richie. . .fancy seeing you here. What's the offense? -- Spitting on the sidewalk -- Walking in public with both hands in your pockets -- Looking in a store window without buying.
RICHIE: Come on – Don't belittle the best system of justice in the world – Some cop with a defective speed gun nabbed me for his quota.
JERRY: Remember that time we were in custody together?
RICHIE: Yeah, truancy. . .kids stuff. I've matured, but I hear you are as youthful as ever.
JERRY: I've swallowed a potent elixir, old friend....It's called 'Principles'...It's something that won't let you age. (A woman enters) Ah, here's, my lawyer Mzzz Veronica Doyle. (Brief pause)
VERONICA: Mr. Pulaski. Are we staying with the program? Remember....you can likely get off without even a fine.
JERRY: Never accept guilt when you have it not.
RICHIE: Bravo! And so unrehearsed! You will overwhelm the court with poetic principles!
JERRY: Excuse me – this is a friend from way back, Richie DiOrio. Ms. Doyle. He's here to deal with a speeding offense.
(Richie and Doyle shake hands)
VERONICA: The most minor offenses are usually heard near the end of the session.
RICHIE: I know. I dropped off my son at the school near here and figured I'd stop by early for some free live entertainment. Drama, horror, comedy! Right before my eyes! Better than TV.
VERONICA: I hope my client can at least manage to steer clear of farce. The court will not allow you to make an issue of this trivial charge. All argument will be forced to adhere to a narrow legal channel.
RICHIE: Jerry, what the devil did you do? (Jerry picks up sign on pole
