    CHAPTER 1

Grant sat on the comfortable sofa and threw his last card down on the coffee table.

Right, that’s me done. Andrew chuckled.

Sore loser. Grant nodded and smiled.

Yeah well. I want to go out tonight. Belinda shook her head.

You keep going down to the pub looking for the love of your life. You aren’t going to find her there. What, are you looking for a looker, a hooker, an alcoholic, or would you actually like to find someone who enjoys real life? A real person. Someone normal. Someone who goes to a coffee shop, goes out, enjoys life. You know, someone real.

    Grant nodded.

Belinda, you and Andrew already have it all. You’ve got each other. You’ve got little Jeremy too. I need to find someone. I would like my own little family. But I have to start somewhere. Where is a single man supposed to go? Belinda nodded.

Well, your brother and I are taking Jeremy out for a stroll through the mall. I think maybe you should come with us. Instead of heading down to the pub. I bet you anything it is always the same people. Over and over, every single time. And you still have the whole afternoon before you go out. So there is plenty of time. Grant nodded.

Yeah, I guess. Grant was quiet.

What are you going to do over at the mall? Belinda smiled.

We are going to buy Jeremy a bucket and spade for the sandpit. And then we are going to head over for the biggest muffin you have ever seen. My treat. I sold a few pullovers that I knitted. Andrew grinned and nodded.

Come with us. Please Grant. Grant nodded.

Okay. Why not? Belinda grinned. They all headed out with Jeremy who was very excited to go and buy his bucket and spade.

Grant smiled as he climbed out of the huge four by four.

You know Andrew, I have always wanted a four by four.

Yeah, well, I am sure if you really want one you can take your pick. Grant chuckled as he picked Jeremy up and smiled.

I guess one day when I have a huge family of my own. Grant handed Jeremy over to Andrew.

You know Grant, I have never heard you talking like this. What made you so broody all of a sudden?

Belinda, it’s nothing new. I guess I don’t say much about it. I also want a nice big family. I don’t have to have a beautiful wife. Pretty maybe. But she needs to be someone I can talk to. Someone I can relax with. And someone who loves children. I am getting old.

Oh Grant, your turn will come.

I am thirty nine. When do you think it will happen then.

Soon, Grant, soon. Grant smiled as they all walked in to the toy store and looked for a bucket and spade. Jeremy grinned.

What color should I get Uncle Grant?

What color do you like squirt?

Blue. Grant smiled as Jeremy chose the blue bucket with a red spade.

They all walked over to the coffee shop. Jeremy carried his packet with the bucket and spade. Grant sat down at one of the tables outside. He got up and adjusted the umbrella so that the sun wouldn’t be in their eyes. He sat down and smiled. He looked around.

So this is what normal people do then. Belinda nodded.

This is one way to meet people. Just look around. Not everyone is with someone. It’s a different venue Grant. Grant smiled and nodded.

And you would be able to have a decent conversation. Not pub talk. The same rubbish over and over again. Grant smiled and shook his head.

A waitress walked over to them and handed them their menus. Grant looked up and admired her from her stilettos, to her hose, her pencil skirt, tiny waist, right the way up to her gorgeous eyes. He was mesmerized. His breath was taken away. It was stolen! He almost gasped. The waitress was beauty personified. She had the nicest legs he had ever seen. And a lovely bottom. Not to mention what he had seen of her gorgeous breasts. She had the biggest eyes he had ever seen. They were chocolate brown. She had a very short hairstyle. Very chic and mod. She wore it with a heavy fringe and sharp sides along the ear which emphasized her cheekbones. It was pitch black. She wasn’t a teenager. She looked to be in her twenties he thought. Maybe her late twenties. She had lovely long slender fingers. She had a slim figure with all the curves in the right places. She wore no rings or jewelry at all. Grant smiled up at her as he took his menu.

Demi smiled and looked at her badge.

My name is. She looked at her badge as if to confirm.

Deena. I’ll be back in a minute to take your order. Take your time folks. She smiled at everyone and walked off.

Grant smiled and followed her with his eyes.

That was odd. She looked as if she had to check her own name. Did you see that Grant? Belinda nodded and smiled.

You like her Grant. Grant. Grant! Grant was very quiet.

    Oh sorry. Belinda chuckled.

    Are you with us Grant?

She’s really pretty. I’ve never seen a waitress so dressed. In stilettos and hose. Belinda grinned.

But she’s a waitress. Grant nodded.

Shame. Must be awful not to be able to get a real job these days. Having to be a waitress to make money. At least she has a job. Maybe she is studying part time. Belinda shook her head.

We shouldn’t judge. Some of these people make more money than you and I put together. Well not you, but Andrew and I. Grant nodded and smiled.

    I guess.

Grant smiled as he got up.

I’ll be back in a sec. He walked over to the toy store. Demi watched from inside the restaurant as he walked off. He was about a head taller than her. He had broad shoulders and a small waist. He had long legs. He had dark brown hair which was professionally cut. He looked like a professional. And he had gorgeous brown eyes. He was smoothly shaven. He walked with confidence. Demi gave a little sigh. He was gorgeous, and built. She stood inside trying to get her body under control. The minute she saw him she wanted to take him in her arms and kiss him. She felt her whole body responding.

Grant walked out of the restaurant. He turned to look. He felt as if someone was watching him. He looked into the restaurant. He spotted the waitress but she had her head down. He smiled as he walked into the toy shop and walked over to the buckets. He smiled as he looked at the little pack of molds lying next to the buckets. He picked one up and held it in his hands. There were crabs and shells, and all sorts of little shapes. He headed over to the counter and paid for it.

Grant walked back to the restaurant with the pack in his hand. He looked up and looked at the young lady that walked by. He almost greeted her. She looked like a twin to the waitress that had served them. Grant shook his head and made his way back to the restaurant and sat down.

And here’s something to go with the buckets squirt. Jeremy beamed.

Oh Uncle Grant, that’s awesome. Grant smiled as Jeremy gave him a huge hug.

Grant sat quietly for a minute. Now he was seeing her face everywhere. Grant smiled and chuckled. Belinda and Andrew both looked his way. He shrugged and looked around, smiling.

The waitress walked back and took their order. She smiled as she looked at Grant. Grant smiled as he handed back the menu and noticed the way she was shaking. Not very visible, but she was shaking. Their eyes kept meeting. Grant stared at her. Demi had to keep breaking eye contact with him. She felt herself blush slightly as she wrote. Demi looked up and nodded towards the corner. She took their order and smiled.

Shan’t be too long. She smiled and walked over to the corner of the restaurant.

A young girl who looked pretty much like a twin to Demi walked over to the corner of the restaurant. Demi took off her little apron and tied it around the girls waist. She quickly took the name badge and pinned it to her. She handed over the menus and gave the young girl the order pad. She turned and discreetly pointed at the table. Demi took the little package that was handed over to her. She kissed her on the cheek.

Thanks Deena. I know you had to go out of your way for this. Deena smiled.

I needed that haircut. And the business cards were on my way. Demi smiled as she dusted a stray hair off of her little sister’s shoulder.

You look neat again. You needed a trim. She kissed Deena on the cheek.

Thank you. Demi took out five business cards from the pack and put them in to Deena’s apron.

See you kiddo. Deena smiled as Demi walked off.

Grant stared as he watched the interaction. The young girl he had seen in the mall was the spitting image of their waitress. Deena smiled as she headed back in to the restaurant. She walked through the doors and went to get the order. She stood at the counter asking for the order. She couldn’t read the last entry. She walked back to Grant’s table.

I’m so sorry. Can I confirm your order? Grant stared. This wasn’t the same woman. But definitely the young girl he had seen. He stared at her. Even though she looked the same, it wasn’t the same woman. Definitely not. Her eyes were a different color and she looked younger. Much younger. She wore a ring and a bracelet. He looked at her name tag.

    Deena, isn’t it? Deena nodded.

Yes Sir. She waited for the taunt, or the tease, or the sarcastic comment.

"You can’t read that last entry, can you? Deena nodded and blushed. She whispered.

No Sir. Grant nodded as he scanned her face.

It’s a carrot muffin, with plenty of cheese. Deena smiled as she read the menu pad. It read ‘C M C YUM!’ Deena grinned and shook her head. She re wrote the order.

I’m really sorry Sir. She walked into the restaurant again.

    Andrew chuckled.

That woman is a bit ditsy. Belinda nodded. Grant smiled.

No, I think they are sisters. The first woman was a bit older. This girl is not the same as the first. Her name is Deena but I have a feeling that her sister stood in for her for a few minutes. Deena chuckled.

You have a vivid imagination. Grant grinned.

Look at her eyes. The first time round, did you see them? Belinda nodded.

    Brown.

Now watch. And look at her clothing. Not the same.

Deena put the muffins down with the coffee. She smiled at everyone. Everyone watched her intently. Deena blushed and whispered.

    What is it? Grant smiled.

Was that your sister? Deena grinned and whispered.

I needed a haircut. And she needed her business cards. So she stood in for me quickly. She looked at them with huge eyes.

    Is something wrong? Grant smiled.

No. Not at all. Do you have one of those business cards? Deena nodded and whispered.

Please, don’t say a word. I could lose my job if they catch me. They all nodded and smiled. Deena took out a business card. She handed it to Grant.

Don’t even mention this. We aren’t really allowed to conduct personal business in the restaurant. Grant nodded and smiled.

Deena walked off and headed into the restaurant. Grant smiled as he looked at the business card. Andrew looked over and read.

Attorney at Law. Wow. That’s a turn up for the books. We were served by an Attorney. Belinda roared with laughter.

    Served? Grant grinned.

Demi Swift. Belinda looked up in shock.

Not the Demi Swift. Hell. That woman has got such a reputation in the courtroom. She doesn’t lose. Ever! Andrew nodded.

She’s busy with a huge case at the moment. Something to do with a woman who has a real bastard for a husband. He has broken so many bones in her body. But he is such a high powered businessman and thinks he is going to get off scott free. His wife is filing for divorce and I bet you anything she is going to get more than half of everything. Serves him right. She is lucky to have Miss Swift on her side. Grant nodded.

Where do you get all this information? Andrew groaned.

Don’t you read the papers? Grant nodded.

Yes, but neither of you recognized her so how would you know it’s her? Belinda nodded.

She doesn’t allow photographs of herself in the papers. It’s a no-no. And if there is a photo of her she always has something in front of her face. A hand or a file. Something. Grant nodded.

    Deena walked up and smiled.

    All fine here? Grant nodded.

Demi, not your twin? Deena smiled.

My older sister. Not my twin.

Is she married? Deena looked down.

I can’t really discuss her with you. She would have my guts for garters. But no. She’s not married. Not even a boyfriend in sight. Grant nodded and stared off in to space.

    Demi? Deena nodded.

Demi Swift. Belinda looked over at Deena’s note pad and saw the little entry C M C YUM! Belinda chuckled as Deena smiled and closed the notepad. Belinda smiled.

Yum! Deena smiled and shook her head as she walked off. Belinda grinned.

You really fancy her Grant. Now you have her business card. Give her a call. That’s your problem. You procrastinate all the time. If you like something, go for it. Grant smiled and nodded.

He took out his cellphone and dialed the number on the card.

    Swift. Grant chuckled.

Well that was Swift, wasn’t it? Demi grinned as she spoke.

    Well, yes, who is this?

Oh I think you know who this is. Demi chuckled.

Yeah, I think I just might.

How far are you from the coffee shop then?

Ouch, ouch, darrrrnnnn. Grant smiled as he heard a
