They have three cats: Hilda, Agnes, and Claw-dia.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This modern fantasy, early chapter book is about an eight year old girl who is secretly a witch. She has to learn to live like a normal kid and hide her powers, but unfortunately she is bullied at school by Melanie. Heidi decides to get even with Melanie when Melanie is cast as Dorthy in the school play and Heidi is cast as a scary tree. Heidi prepares a spell so Melanie forgets her lines in the play.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Heidi Hecklebeck is a young witch and she is being bullied by Melanie at school so Heidi wants to cast a spell to get even. The book captures the fun spirit of the Practical Magic film (before it gets serious) with a wise aunt, fun spell ingredients, and a fearless heroine. The story is clearly geared towards teaching a lesson about responsibility and even though bullying is talked about in the book, it is never actually addressed. Illustrations are done in black and white watercolor. This book is certainly for aimed at children more towards third grade than Kindergarten. Vocabulary is somewhat complex and there is a lot of it. The pictures will help young readers with words and ideas that they might be struggling with. Children, especially girls, who like magic or who are having trouble in school with bullies will probably like this book. Also, there is a glitter on the cover! This book is part of a series, but it can easily standalone. Recommended.

A SPELL FOR
SMELL-A-NIE
Abracadabra!
Alakazam!
Presto change-o!
Heidi Heckelbeck flipped open her Book of Spells. The book had been a gift from her grandmother, who was a witch. Heidi’s mother was also a witch, as well as her Aunt Trudy and, of course, Heidi. Heidi’s dad and little brother, Henry, were just regular people.
The book’s worn pages crinkled as she thumbed through them.
Bingo!
Heidi said to herself.
She had found the spell:
Heidi had discovered it last night. Tucked inside the page was a piece of paper. Heidi unfolded it. It was a list of all the rotten things Melanie Maplethorpe had done to Heidi on her first day of school yesterday.
Mean Things Melanie Did to Me
1. She called me smelly.
2. She gave me five dirty looks for no reason!
3. She put a jack-o’-lantern face on my self-portrait.
4. She made me get cast as a scary apple tree in the class play.
I’m going to teach Princess Smell-a-nie a lesson once and for all,
said Heidi.
In three weeks Heidi’s second-grade class would be performing The Wizard of Oz. Heidi planned to cast the spell on opening night.
Imagine how meanie Melanie will feel when she forgets all her lines, thought Heidi. She could hardly wait.
