    Episode 8: The Skeleton Crew

    Captain Lucy Smokeheart lay listlessly on the bed in her comfy cabin on the Navy ship Accounting. She should have been consumed by the softness of the pillows, disarmed by the purring warmth of the kitten by her thigh, rendered toothless and docile by the ineffable warmth of the blankets.

    She barely noticed them at all.

    Instead, she stared up at the clouds painted on the ceiling and thought about ghosts. And ghost ships. She thought about strange shapes and unexplained noises in the dark. She thought about sunken fleets and curses and hauntings.

    She thought about her brother, Captain Robert Carver.

    When Diego slipped into her room with her lunch tray, she didn't even twitch. Are you… OK? Diego set the tray on her table and took a hesitant step toward her.

    Do you believe in ghosts? Lucy asked him, still staring up.

    What? Of course not, Diego said, his voice full of scorn. Why, do you?

    Lucy's arm hung off the edge of the bed. I believe in mermaids, she said. I believe in lizard people and cannibals. I believe in ice magic and shadows that steal your breath away. Why not Captain Bluebraid and her skeleton crew, too?

    Diego's brow furrowed. You have a point. But… why are you thinking about ghosts in the first place?

    How do you kill a ghost? Lucy asked, as if he hadn't said anything at all. Do you think it's even possible?

    How do you hurt something that's already dead? Diego shuffled his feet. I — look, I have to go before they get suspicious. I'm supposed to be getting lunch to the Governor, too.

    They'd been worried about whether he could blend back in with the crew upon their return from Lime Cove Island, but apparently his Navy jacket gave him an impenetrable disguise. He'd joined in the general confusion when Lucy was brought back on board, and nobody had even given him a second glance.

    See if you can sneak in later tonight, Lucy said. We're going to need a plan.

    A plan for what?!

    Lucy turned her head to look at
