About this ebook

The Montreal Plateau is one of the hippest neighborhoods of any metropolitan area in North America - but most first time visitors to this great city never even know it's there. It's a delightful tree-lined residential area criss-crossed by a few large avenues, spotted with wonderful parks, and home to everything from live theater, to authentic French restaurants, bookstores, bakeries, and chic specialty shops of every description.
The Plateau is truly a walker's paradise as it is small enough to be easily traversed in the course of a day, yet big enough to offer the diversity and kind of eclectic attractions to keep you fully engaged and delighted as you wander around. This is the kind of neighborhood where cute little restaurants of every description - all with tantalizing menus - are frequently found tucked away in quiet, charming nooks and corners of otherwise completely non-commercial living areas.
The bottom line is that the Montreal Plateau is an undiscovered treat for those who love to lose themselves in organic culture and ambiance without being constantly confronted with hoards of tourists doing the same thing. The Plateau is a gem in a world characterized by visitor saturation.
Welcome to one of North America's best travel experiences - hidden in the largest French speaking city in the world outside of France - and a place that you will have all to yourself - along with those who make it home.

I'm a freelance writer of ebooks and blog articles dealing with travel, history, healthy living and art. While my travel writing certainly contains practical information to help people orient themselves to different places, I tend to go a little deeper into the historical context than the average guide book. My theory is the more you know about a place besides its location, the more you see. This is the same philosophy I bring to all the subjects I write about. My goal is to give readers a unique twist on each topic I address in hopes of offering a new way of looking at things that both challenges, and expands the perspective you arrived with.My professional background is in education as a teacher in everything from public schools to adult education, and even a stint in corporate training. When I'm not writing I enjoy spending time reading, hiking, and traveling.I call Marin county in the San Francisco Bay Area home, but I also spend a lot of time in Montreal, Québec.

    Le Plateau – an introduction

Montreal - Canada's second largest city - is one of the best kept tourist destination secrets in all of North America. Located roughly an hour's drive from the US states of New York and Vermont, it offers visitors a peek into a unique cultural enclave that will have you thinking you're somewhere in Europe rather than just a few short minutes from the United States and the rest of English speaking Canada.

What makes Montreal so uncommon and fascinating is that it represents an organic link to the days when this part of North America was a French colony. The traces of this history are everywhere in Montreal, from its old town area with buildings dating from the mid 1600's to the classic French architectural style still evident in the mansard roofs and delicate design details of buildings throughout this metropolis of nearly 2 million people.

In the heart of the City

The Plateau Mont-Royal is located just north of downtown Montreal and adjacent to the giant hill that gives the city its name; the Mont-Royal. Starting at Rue Sherbrooke to the south, then extending north to Canadian Pacific railroad tracks just north of Laurier Parc, and running from Avenue du Parc to the west all the way to Avenue de Lorimier on its easter edge – le Plateau Mont-Royal is the very heart of French speaking Montreal, and the cultural core of this dynamic international metropolis.

    A Linguistic Island

What truly sets Montreal apart, though, from all other areas north of the Rio Grande is language and culture. Montreal is the largest French speaking city in the world outside of France. And while it is definitely also a bi-lingual city, with English being widely spoken, French is at the very core of this vibrant
