    Safety Considerations

    When installing a garage door opener, always take the appropriate safety precautions to prevent injuries to yourself or damages to your home.

    Weight

    The control unit of your garage door opener is mounted in the ceiling and weighs about 50 pounds, so exercise caution when installing it. Always lift with your legs, and not your back to prevent a herniated disc or other back injuries.

    Stability

    Most likely you’ll need a ladder to install the motor for your garage door opener. Make sure your ladder is on a level surface and that no children or pets are around when mounting the motor.

    Electrical Hazards

    Garage door openers use electricity to operate, so take precautions against electrocution and fires. Keep a fire extinguisher handy while you work. Make sure it is manufactured for electrical fires. Keep the wires and the motor away from water and always follow the instructions in the owner’s manual and in this book. If you have a basic working knowledge of electricity and wiring, the danger of a fire or electrocution should be a non-issue, but it is always best to err on the side of caution.

    Make sure you turn off your main breaker box before you install any wiring and make sure your motor is plugged into a properly grounded outlet to avoid a surge.
