Albert Anastasia Mafia Kingpin Of The Brooklyn Waterfront 1941-1944

About this ebook
Albert Anastasia is perhaps best known for having been murdered while he was sitting in a barber's chair. Many are unaware of his early years as a Mafia operative on the Brooklyn waterfront. In the early 1940s he established himself as an extortionist who seized $35,000-$40,000 at a time from longshoremen. He was also ruthless in getting rid of his opposition, individuals like Anthony Romeo, who I have profiled in my e-book. Anastasia once protected the lives of the Mangano brothers, who came to the U.S. from Palermo, Italy. Eventually Philip and Thomas Mangano were eliminated by Albert Anastasia on his rise to the top of the Gambino Crime Family of New York. I have used ancestral records and newspaper articles to depict Anastasia's early criminal career, including photos of his family, details of his crimes and the people he associated with in what came to be known as Murder Incorporated.

Umberto Albert Anastasio/Anastasia (September 26, 1902-October 25, 1957) was a kingpin gangster who operated on the Brooklyn waterfront.
Figure 1 Albert Anastasia On May 1, 1940 he was being pursued by authorities for the disappearance of Peter Pete Panto (1911-July 14, 1939). Figure 2 Pete Panto Anastasia’s contact man was Anthony Romeo, also known as Tony Spring. Romeo’s identity was unveiled during an all night grilling involving nearly 100 officers and delegates from seven International Longshoreman’s locals. On May 1st the Brooklyn Eagle reported that Anthony Romeo (born 1916) was a delegate of Local 929. The publication called Anastasia the kingpin and referred to Romeo as his contact man.
New York City District District Attorney William O’Dwyer (July 11, 1890-November 24, 1964) headed an operation that sought to apprehend Albert Anastasia. Figure 3 William O'Dwyer The Brooklyn Eagle disclosed Anastasia as the head of the waterfront racket as early as April 14, 1940. In several stories afterward the newspaper divulged the inner workings of the organization.
Albert Anastasia had reportedly received from $35,000 to $45,000 in illegal kickbacks and dues from workers along the Brooklyn waterfront. Anastasia’s name was circulated in a murder investigation that centered on the waterfront. Before May 1940 he had beaten murder raps on three separate occasions.
