A wounded Royal Navy captain tries to find love in the face of his self-doubt...

Phoebe Hartridge runs into serious danger on an icy winter evening. But her rescuer, the mysterious Anthony Sterling, immediately melts her heart and makes her dream of a life beyond her tiny, sheltered world. The more she gets to know him, the more she senses he is hiding something from her.

When Captain Anthony Sterling was wounded at Trafalgar, he lost his leg, his fiancee, and any hope for happiness. Even the revelation that he is the heir to a fortune brought him nothing but bitterness. Then his chance encounter with the charming, innocent Phoebe makes him wonder if there may be a future for him after all. But first he must escape the shadows of his past.

A Winter’s Knight

Oh, no, were the first words Phoebe Hartridge muttered when she came to. She remembered her horse Dunnett sliding on the ice. She remembered him panicking, rearing, throwing her clear. Then she remembered nothing at all.

As she looked around the snow-laden forest, it was obvious that hours had passed. The sun hung low in the sky. She was chilled to the bone, despite her warm riding habit and heavy cloak. Phoebe chanced a look at her skirts and winced. A long tear in the cloth reinforced her memory of the brutal fall.

Mrs Chambers is going to have my head for this, she said out loud, thinking of the frown that would cross the face of her housekeeper, who was really more of a surrogate mother. Phoebe had sewn much of the outfit herself, and she did not relish repeating the work. When she shifted her weight, an icy puddle splintered beneath her foot, soaking her shoes. Oh, bother. Was nothing destined to go right on this freezing cold day?

Winter had come early this year, though it was not yet Christmas. A recent snowfall blanketed the wood with white. As Phoebe rode home from an errand earlier, she had decided that a shortcut through the trees would be beautiful…and also get her home in time for luncheon.

Now she was paying for that foolish decision. From the hoofprints on the ground, it was clear that Dunnett had bolted. Homeward, she hoped. Although if the horse came home without a rider, her father would be beside himself when he learned of it. In fact, perhaps someone was already looking for her. That thought gave her a bit of strength.

Phoebe struggled to stand, shaking her still dizzy head. Dark blond hair tumbled down around her, pulled loose in the fall. She tugged it back and tied it with a ribbon, hoping it would hold till she got home. She must look a fright.

She looked around, trying to orient herself. She was completely alone, and there was no hint of any house nearby, though she knew that must be an illusion. It wasn’t as if Phoebe lived in the wilderness. With luck she could find the road and hail someone down. Taking a few tentative steps, she hoped that she would reach the road quickly. Her weak leg hurt worse than usual due to the cold. It was a familiar ache, one she’d had since childhood. A carriage accident had crushed a bone in her lower leg, and she never fully recovered. With no other option, Phoebe began to walk through the snow, reaching out to trees for additional support. Her limping gait had a peculiar rhythm in the woods. The only other sound was the whisper of the cold wind, soft but insistent.

Fortunately, Phoebe had a good sense of direction. She used the setting sun to point her toward where she knew the main post road had to be. She started to shiver as she walked, the wet wool of the cloak providing only the barest protection. She wanted to sit down and rest, but it would be better by far to reach warmth by nightfall. Spending the night in these woods would be idiocy.

She had just sighted the long line of the road in the distance when she noticed two figures silhouetted in the late afternoon light. She felt a rush of relief. Assistance was at hand.

Excuse me! Phoebe called out to them. Over here! Can you help me?

The figures turned, and after a moment’s hesitation they began to walk toward her. As they got closer, Phoebe saw that both were gentlemen. Then, as they got nearer still, she had to revise her opinion. They weren’t gentlemen at all. Both were poorly dressed and unshaven. One wore an overcoat, but it was quite ragged. The other, shorter man didn’t even have that much. Perhaps they wouldn’t be much help. Phoebe began to doubt her wisdom in calling attention to herself, but she wasn’t actually scared until they got close enough for her to see their smiles. Not friendly at all, she realized.
