    Virus Z - Robert Paine

    Virus Z: Niagara – Episode 4

An unknown virus, ordered to be silently researched by the government, is in the hands of a tired, overworked CDC Scientist. A small mistake leading to an infection. It started with one. One person becoming what no one truly believed to be real.

James Ericson witnessed the downfall of Floor Three in the Atlanta CDC Lab. He saw a man he admired turn into a flesh-devouring monster. Now, with just his blood stained lab coat and a mysterious flash drive, he must attempt to outrun the virus.

Can he make it to safety before it catches him, or will he end up just like the other mindless zombies beginning to fill the streets only one thing on their mind?

How long can he survive as he stares death in the face?

    Niagara – Episode 4

James stared at the silent radio, half in shock and half in disbelief, and finally spoke.

I have a flash drive that is password protected. It was slipped into my possession by one of the last known doctors to work on this zombie virus. The contents are very important. Can you please just get me into contact with someone from Ottawa, Canada? At the very least, I can give them some type of information.

James was bluffing but the Toronto people didn’t know that. He still had no idea what was on the flash drive. Silence greeted him. Completely frustrated by the lack of response, he started to tell them that he’d try later but a voice came over the radio.

Give me one hour. You will talk with Ottawa then.

James blew out a long breath of air and glanced at Gwen. She was grinning from ear to ear. James glanced at Eric, saying, I have to find out what’s on these flash drives.

Eric looked toward his buddy, Jay, who was a fellow soldier who had originally found the couple.

Go crank up the generator. We have to get a computer up and running. No matter what.

After Jay left, James grasped the hard drive and moved over to the computer. Steven asked him, What do you think is on it?

James had no clue. He shrugged and said, Hopefully, something worth telling Canada.

When Jay came back into the huge barracks, Eric tried the computer and grinned when it sprang to life.

Alright, Doc, we’re up and running.

I’m not really a doctor, just a research... James tried to correct him.

Close enough. Let’s see what’s on that flash drive.

Eric’s expression let James know that he didn’t care what title James held at this point. As long as James could help in a medical capacity, who cared what they called him?

With a nervous smile, James settled into the office chair and plugged in the flash drive. A window appeared and James squinted at the screen before picking the latest dated file.

A video sprang to life of his boss, Dr. Daniel Capell, sitting at his computer. His tone was low and the doctor held his head down while speaking softly.

James, out of everyone I know, you are the only one receiving this message. I think we both know it’s because you’re a splendid soul for putting up with my grouchy ass.

James listened while he looked at the pristine sterile layout of the lab at his boss’ back. All the sterile equipment was now lost to them. It had all been for nothing. The doctor droned on.

The government will pull funding for part of our work at the end of this week, James. They’re outsourcing virus research in order to save money. Can you believe that? They’re just handing over the weapons to other countries! I’m sorry that I have to do this, James, but I’m too old and tired to get another job. And I won’t let America fall like this.

The video showed a peek of the Doctor’s angry face before he pulled a tiny vial with the bold biohazard symbol and wiggled it in front of the camera.

This virus arrived this morning, James. It’s a government mutation from a virus that almost caused a pandemic, one that makes the victim bleed out internally.

By the Doctor’s voice, James could tell he was still trying to cope with whatever news he had just learned. James swallowed hard and tried to brace himself. Gwen, Eric, and Jay lurked in the background. James could almost feel their mental questions bombarding him.

The doctor finally hissed into the mic, The United States of America mutated—no, damn it! They designed it! Something out of a hideous virus that almost wrecked the population and now... He shook his head in frustration, Now, James, they are telling us to hand over this brand new weapon to India in order for them to figure out just what this new virus is capable of. They’re just handing the weapon over so India can replicate it and use it in their own arsenal. Can you believe that!?

James thrust a hand into his hair but jerked when the Doctor hung the tiny vial close to the camera. He could barely hear the name, whispered with a hint of fear.

    "Ebola."

Like a huge wave crashing down against the beach, Jay slammed them back into reality.

Holy shit! Seriously? No, man, no! That doc has it wrong. The U.S. was sending that mutated virus off native soil so our population wouldn’t be infected if something happened.

James didn’t know which theory was right since both were plausible. Whatever the case, he had to find out if the professors at Ottawa had any idea how to set this straight or stop the zombie progress in its tracks. He asked Eric if there was a pen and paper to jot down the details. Once Eric gave him the necessary items, James quickly wrote down as much as he could remember about the videos. After looking over his notes, James replayed and froze the video over certain spots before quickly noting the name and numbers on the tiny vial.

He glanced at the time and quickly shifted to the video link they had with Canada. They didn’t have to wait long. The representative introduced a professor from the Ottawa University. James quickly spoke up, with all he knew.

With your help, I think we can get this under control. I have a video which contains the name of the virus that started all this. I need to get into Canada for the researchers to see this video and act fast.

Mr. Ericson, you can understand why we are not accepting foreigners across our borders. Send us the file electronically, so that we can help everyone.

No. In order to get this file, you need to let us over the border. That includes my wife and child along with the three soldiers. I have feared for my family’s life the entire time we’ve journeyed to this point. We’ve come all the way from Atlanta. We’re not stopping now. This fear is not from the zombies but from humans that are angry because I worked for the CDC. I need an escort across your borders and you need the name of this virus to safely reach you. Am I correct?

The man motioned for James to wait and then went off camera to talk. When the man reappeared, he told James, We must get that file, Mr. Ericson. I do not want any undead escaping across though. Do you think you can make it to the Niagara Falls region before tomorrow?

Everyone behind James muttered positive answers. James echoed them and nodded vehemently. The Canadian professor told him, We can dispatch a helicopter tomorrow when you arrive. If you are infected before then, I ask that you do everything in your power to get that flash drive to the pilot. I must warn you that the Niagara Falls area is heavily overtaken by the undead. It will not be easy for you. But it is the only place our helicopter can reach, so it’s your only option.

I understand. We’ll get there or...um... James almost said or die trying.

Eric leaned over his shoulder and growled at the Canadian, "We’ll get him
