About this ebook

(SHORT STORY) I love a horror story with no reference to the supernatural. My other horror story "Kell Hall" is about monsters and netherworlds and portals and getting trapped in your own imagination. This is scary in a completely different way. This kind of scary scares people because it actually *happens*. Someone once told me that "The Silence of the Lambs" was so scary because it served as a reminder that there are people out there like that. As much as I love camping, this is a totally real fear for me, the idea of bad people out in the woods...

    A Night at the Lake

    A Horrifying Story

Brenan floated on his back, dozing, bathing in the light of the stars and the full moon. It was hard to find a place where you could see the Milky Way, in all its profound beauty. He paddled gently with his arms and found peace under that sky. The water was so cool. Normally he didn’t like it this cool, especially for skinny dipping, but Natalie had dragged him in. They needed to set up the tent and get a fire going. It was going to be cold when they came back.

They had swam out a good bit. He could just barely see the car up on the hill where they’d left it. She would probably give up on the whole camping thing once they got back. She’d go straight to the car and turn on the heater while he unpacked all the gear. It would be late, she would be tired, and she’d say Why don’t we just sleep in the car. We can go camping some other time. This was that other time. They did this every time. But Brenan didn’t mind. It was quiet, it was cool and peaceful, and they were together. That was all. The stars looked so damn perfect out here in the country. A splash of water interrupted his thoughts. He flapped his arms in surprise and looked over at Natalie, giggling and treading water.

    You splashed me!

    No I didn’t!

He leaned forward and swam toward her. I’m gonna get you!

She yelped and started swimming away, laughing. They paddled and paddled toward the little beach she had spied, cackling and calling out to each other. Finally he overtook her, grabbed an ankle, and pulled her to him. Got her knee and raked her in, limb by limb, until she was pressed up against him, pretending to struggle from his strong grip.

You’re mine now, he whispered, kissing her outstretched neck. That means I get to have my way with you.

Say it ain’t so, she replied, meeting his lips and throwing her arms around him.

He swam as best as he could with her latched on, kissing him, until they washed up on the tiny beach. It was gray mud, slimy and cool, covered with little pools of water. He pushed her up and up, dragging her along the slippery bank, and then flopped over on his back, faking exhaustion. She rolled on top of him, intent on keeping him pinned.
